This. The AI was mostly clever smoke and mirrors, for example them shouting 'flank him' even when they didn't know how. Still fucking terrifying, mind.
This has got me wondering; what was the first game to feature true 3D enemies. Games like DooM and Duke used 3D environments but pseudo-3D sprites.
HL had a great AI for its time.
do you know who ate all the doughnuts
Explain that.

The AI was so great it outsmarted the player with one sentence. :downs:
Halo.
Don't lie to yourself. Games these days would be so much different if it weren't for Halo.
I really dont know how halo helped at all. Anything seen in halo would probably be seen in any other game, even though if may have not existed because halo is simple as hell...
In the end, I dont know why the hell is there sooooo much hype over the halo series...

Okay. But there is hype over the halo series. And many games are influenced by it. Therefore it shaped the games of today.
The genre of FPS was about to be discarded by devs if it wasn't for Half-Life, I remember reading
Something about them just becoming nothing but glorified tech-demos
Feels like things have come full circle again, hope there's another revolution-thing

Halo is essentially a Doom clone, just another corridor shooter except with truck-loads of Microsoft-brand PR that buffs it to a mirror shine.
Just the same old shoes you're Dad wore, with a well-to-do shoe shine boy working them over endlessly with unstoppable resolve

That's nice, but it shaped the way games are made today.
That's nice, but it shaped the way games are made today.
Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if Halo was released as an RTS as originally planned...
That's nice, but it shaped the way games are made today.
In much the same way Britney Spears shaped the way music is today. Pu-raise the Jesus!
Yeah, it showed with enough of the tender green, you can convince just all the cool kids the mediocre is exceptional
Damn halo, thanks to that game we have recharging health.
Still, you make some pretty good games bungie, but fuck you.
It also helped with the "fps's on consoles" boom.
Also vehicles in fps too, and don't fucking say tribes damn it, go up to any guy in khaki shorts and flip-flops at your uni and ask him if he knows what tribes is, then ask him if he knows what halo is. yeah.

F.E.A.R has better AI than Half life. Really, anyone would tell you.

I never said anything about it being a good thing. All I said is that Halo shaped gaming. That's what the thread is about.

Regenerating Health is a good thing. Not having it is a reason I hate Half Life.
And of course people are going to know what Halo is more likely than know what Tribes is because Tribes is old and Halo is new and more popular.
F.E.A.R has better AI than Half life. Really, anyone would tell you.
Half-Life was published 1998.
F.E.A.R. was published 2005.
Wow, no mention of Perfect Dark or Goldeneye 007.
Lackluster thread.
Starcraft - Perfected RTS

Wouldn't really work, as it is a matter of opinion.
I'm surprised no ones mentioned this yet:
Dungeons & Dragons created the role-playing game genre, and most of the standards, systems, and universal lore in today's computer role-playing games. The earliest MMORPGs were all derived from D&D's original stat and combat systems as well.
Updated Thread,be sure to post reason with your suggestion.
No one has mentioned Super Mario Bros yet? I know its cliched but it basically saved the video games industry and was a pretty revolutionary game at the time.

Why do people care soo much about regenerating health?
Its the problems of these days games. Their just too damn easy. Got hit in the head and in critical condition? Wait in cover for a couple of secs, and your ready to go pwn some more...
Its not a challenge anymore... You dont fight to live anymore... Its just too easy.
If thats what halo gave to fps games, then id say we would all be better without it, as it isnt the least fun....
Command & Conquer TD & RA.
I see you haven't added them.
A reason you ask?
Because they helped to shape the RTS series.
Doom is the FPS that shaped all FPS games.
Starcraft for RTS.
Wrong, WarCraft and WarCraft II had the same gameplay style and they came first :3
Halo - First game to be hated for reasons that are downright stupid.

I hate regenerating health... remember the good old games like... Tomb Raider. If you're low on health and have no medkits you're fucked. You had to think about when you use your medkits and so on. Much more fun than this shit.
Oh look! I'm Hurt! I'll just wait here for 5 seconds and I'll continue.
That was actually Thief if Yahtzee is anything to go by.
Thief was a pretty big game, but Metal Gear was a huge mainstream success.
But seriously, the whole regenerating health aspect needs a mention, I guess. But that's not really something that's completely changed the face of shooters, so no.
It's something like half of the games come out with today have now.
Just in my living room:
Halo (Of course).
Red Faction: Guerilla.
All the new Call of Duty games.
Gears of War games.
Prototype.

I believe in the multiplayer for Duke there were actual 3d models, but I could be thinking of a newer version of the game.
