Fallout 1 Anyone?
System Shock
Without System Shock, you wouldn't have Dead Space, Doom 3, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Half-Life, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and many more I can't think of off the top of my head right now.
The original System Shock was the game that brought first person shooters beyond the simple run and gun of the Doom and Quake series and showed that so much more could be done with the genre.
It's influence even extends far beyond first person games and many of its features and innovation are now in virtually every sci-fi themed action game made since then.
Among its many innovations:
-Standing, crouching, and prone posture as well as leaning to peek around corners.
-Recoil for weapons.
-The idea of immersing the player in a story that drives their actions.
-Multiple ammo types for firearms.
-Telling a story through audio logs when face to face interaction with people would be inappropriate.
-The use of small puzzles for hacking.
-Physics, objects that conveyed at least some sense of momentum and mass.
-Many many more that I can't think of right now.
Its low popularity even forshadowed the fate of many innovative games to come, showing the sad reality that no amount of innovation or design will beat good advertising.
To quote one reviewer "the best computer game of 1994 ... came and went whilst everyone was busy killing each other in Doom II.".
MAFIA was also revolutionary in some senses.
It had really good cop ai: Cops don't instantly know it's you unless you commit it in their face. Meaning, if you speeded, they only knew the car you were driving. So you could easily ditch the car and they would just go up to your car and look around for any clues. This works in reverse too. Also added the need to obey traffic laws or you get tickets.
Mafia is also one of the earliest games i can think of that had dynamic vehicle damage. (albeit rough)
[editline]03:04PM[/editline]
plus weapons did almost near realistic damage aswell.
[editline]03:05PM[/editline]
you can also shoot out carr tires completely if you hit the main bolt holding it in it's axis a few times.
[editline]03:05PM[/editline]
also cars used gas and you had to pay attention to the meter.

brb playing mafia
Also this was also accomplished and released late 2002 while gta was released late 2001. Illusion was ahead of it's time.
I've no idea what came first but we could use a brought the scary game genre aswell, i have no clue which it would be my guess would be the silent hill series in some way i guess
also, tomb raider 1, that must've done something good for the action adventure genre
the tycoon/sim city series' for bringing simulation to where it is perhaps too? not sure if there prior ones

Resident Evil was released 3 years before Silent Hill, so Resident Evil should get the place in my opinion.

revolutionized all aspects of gaming as we know it
HL's real innovation was seamless levels, no loading screens but just brief pauses in the gameplay.
I agree. Before, it was just 'go to the exit zone/door with a endless shadow that you can't see through, to get to the next level'.
HL actually had the start of the next map at the end of the current one to give the illusion of seamless.

Resident Evil was just kinda scary in a "oh fuck there's a fucking bigass monster right there and I've got only 2 bullets left oh fuck what am I gonna do" which isn't really that scary. Silent Hill was scary in a "holy shit what the fuck is that noise oh god there's someone really bad around here oh fuck what's gonna happen", which is much more scary. So I'd say Silent Hill should get that place.

But then again Haunted House was made in 1981... :downs:
Then GTA3 for perfecting it.
Well used reference. It's quite true. Except maybe for it's sequels.
Tennis for Two: First game with graphics
Dune / Red Alert invented RTS
Modern day
Crysis - Revolutionised current generation graphics
Not Modern Day
Super Mario 64 - Bought in 3D With a Bang
Definitely needs Diablo for hack n slash and drop in/out multiplayer [From what I can remember.]
Um, Half-Life 1 more so shaped how much games focus on story telling these days.
no, i think zork had the biggest impact on story telling

That is seamless.
And it takes no time to load on the computers of today, so it is seamless.
Super Mario 64
LoZ: Ocarina of Time
Starcraft for RTS.
What's with warcraft I ?
Wouldnt Goldeneye count as on of these?
*cough* Marathon *cough*
Yeah, because that was popular.
