I only just got this and I like it. The only thing that itches my back is the short life of the captain, you never get to finish the "quests". I know it's a design choise but still.
It's like naval combat only in space.
would actually be fun if every battle weren't "get underneath the enemy!!!!!"
I use flanking whenever possible. But if you're down to your last ship, going down is the only way to win anything, pretty much. Well, that depends on the situation too, up is the exact same if everyone is facing eachother and showing no bottom.
Sounds really cool, just about to launch the demo.
If you guys like this you may like Distant Worlds
Holy shit, I just recieved four Battleships in a row.
Is this game any good?

Yes.

You might as well complain that every shooter is about shooting people. "Get underneath the enemy" is the essential idea, but how you do that varies wildly depending on the arrangement of ships and the choices that the enemy AI makes. The only problem is that the enemy AI can be a bit predictable in the current version so once you learn its general strategy it's not as hard.
I've been e-mailing the developer a lot about the AI. He said he's working on improving it in the next update.
This game is great. Though, is there any way to get past the 7 month death thing?
was trying the demo, looks like its hor+ and can support any resolution by editing the settings.xml nice

You're missing the point. The goal in this game is not to get under the enemy, but to destroy them.
destroying enemy ships:flotilla::shooting the enemy:shooters
My complaint is that seemingly the only viable core tactic is to get underneath the enemy. Consider an ultra-linear FPS where you can only really win by taking a certain spot on the map. Nobody's tactics are going to change, they're just going to rush the best spot.

No, you can also kill enemies without flanking. It's possible (though rare) to do damage even against strong front armor - so one viable tactic is to pour so much firepower into a single enemy that they get destroyed by lucky hits alone.
This is an especially viable tactic with ships that have torpedoes since a single torpedo does so much damage that most ships go down after a few hits.
It's similar to an FPS - either you can be tactical and careful so that it's easier to shoot your enemy in their weak spot or you can go in guns blazing.
"Taking a certain spot on the map" isn't a good analogy because, like I said, the actual movement and positioning of your ships in Flotilla varies greatly in each battle. Even though you're technically always trying to get "under" the enemy, since the battlefield is full 3D and ships can reorient in any way, and since ships can defend each other's weak points, and since each ship has a different cone of fire and different weak points, getting "under" the enemy can be quite challenging and can be done in a variety of ways (unless you have them totally outnumbered).
So basically Homeworld 2 without 60% of the content.
I got this, though has anyone figured out a way around the life time limit?
If you guys like this you may like Distant Worlds
I can't really wrap my head around that game. Maybe I need some guide on how to start atleast.

And the combat is completely different and it's much cheaper than a full game like Homeworld 2.
At least play the demo before saying something stupid like that.

You do realise that if you go under them, they will turn to face you, not fly horizontally? Or turn around so their bottom is up. So the best way is not to go down but whereever their bottom or rear is, simple.

2 vs. 2: 1 left/up, other right/bottom. Target same ship, focus fire. Move ship that's closest to other non-targeted enemy slightly back, use other ship to flank behind. Finish enemy 1, dispatch ship 2 with ease.
Works with any ship basically.

Homeworld 2 is like, 4.79 right now.
But I really hate the way you absolutely have to shoot their rear/bottom armour.
