graphics were incredibly stale, especially by 2001 standards
the voice acting was charming in the same way old b-movie horror flicks are charming
and the gameplay was as balanced as a person with their leg blown off
i like the concept, and it is a good game, but 1st place? you really can't think of any other games that had top-notch concept AND execution?
Come to think of it, I really don't know what game I would give first place to. It's not Deus Ex but Deus Ex would probably be at least top 10.

You can't go back to papyrus and enjoy using it, Doom you can go back to and enjoy it as long as you can look past the graphics.
That's like saying Diablo 1 doesn't belong on that list just because the sequel had more features

yeah i can understand how people that have never played it before can enjoy it but when you play it when it came out as a young kid it's really fucking cool. when you come back to it in the year 2012 it's literally the biggest most ill-conceived piece of crap ever. i can't even get to hells kitchen without dying of boredom. it's such a shame. i can't speak for everybody but oh my god, it's so boring.
same goes for thief in a way. it was really intense when it first came out but it's seriously irritatingly lame
just think, though. in another decade we're all going to look back and think of games that set the bar now with original story and interesting storytelling methods (like mass effect for example) and be like WOW THIS GAME IS PLAYS LIKE DONKEY DOO-DOO

Portal 1 should be replaced by Half-Life 1. Portal was a cool new concept when it came out, but Portal 2 is leaps better and Half-Life 1 was more influential.
half-life 1 looked great at the time but oh my god, it's sooo boring. i don't understand how it gets so much credit other than leading up to a pretty decent sequel. it's like any other average shooter that came out at the time.
you know what else came out in 1998? rainbow six. god forbid someone would remember a game that had substance to it.

tbh you could compare half-life to daikatana. sure, they came out at different years but both games have god-awful AI and pretty average visuals at the time. if it wasn't for the modding scene and enormous amounts of advertising from gaming magazines, nobody would even think about half-life.
it's kind of like blood or MDK. those games were all over gaming mags at the time. unfortunately MDK has been pretty much long forgotten

in fact when you think about it, games like gunman: chronicle (which is essentially a half-life mod) are like 200x better than half-life. you get to DRIVE TANKS in that game. what does half-life have? shitty tramways that go in one direction
Only Call of Duty is Call of Duty 4 at 58. I guess 58 is an alright number for setting the new standard of shooter post-2007 (:downs:) but no CoD1?

parts of it haven't held up very well but goddamn I do love the heck out of most of it.
the most frustrating thing about the list and gaming lists in general is because people post game titles for nostalgia sake and not for the sake of them being GENUINELY GOOD

if facepunch did a poll i'm sure a lot of people would rage at the difference of opinion too. a lot of the users here are here because of half-life and garry's mod, even though those of us with a brain know that those games are really just insanely average
