The places I disagree with most (and of course, this is purely my opinion): Half Life 2 (Massively overrated, needs to be much further down. Was still a good game though.) Portal 2 (Wasn't that amazing) Team Fortress 2 (I think it should be a bit higher, even though Im not so much of a fan of it nowadays) Fallout 3 Fallout New Vegas (better than FO3) Rome Total War (Should be higher, and should be joined by other Total War games like Medieval and Empire) Deus Ex Human Revoloution (Should be higher) Battlefield 3 (Should not be on the list altogether) There is a disturbing lack of Real Time Strategy on the list in general as well. The only ones that really stick out are Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1&2 and Rome.
Yeah, the entire C&C Series before C&C 3 is missing. Agreed on BF3 - It should just be the name of the series, either that or 1942 or 2 because they're the most important in the series. Also, no Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon games. Still a dogshit list.
Burnout does not hold a single spot? What the actual fuck.
half-life 1 looked great at the time but oh my god, it's sooo boring. i don't understand how it gets so much credit other than leading up to a pretty decent sequel. it's like any other average shooter that came out at the time. you know what else came out in 1998? rainbow six. god forbid someone would remember a game that had substance to it. [editline]14th July 2012[/editline] tbh you could compare half-life to daikatana. sure, they came out at different years but both games have god-awful AI and pretty average visuals at the time. if it wasn't for the modding scene and enormous amounts of advertising from gaming magazines, nobody would even think about half-life. it's kind of like blood or MDK. those games were all over gaming mags at the time. unfortunately MDK has been pretty much long forgotten [editline]14th July 2012[/editline] in fact when you think about it, games like gunman: chronicle (which is essentially a half-life mod) are like 200x better than half-life. you get to DRIVE TANKS in that game. what does half-life have? shitty tramways that go in one direction
Half-Life 1 had a lot of FPS 'firsts,' and there's a lot more to games than AI and visuals. For it's time, Half-Life stood head-and-shoulders above the rest in terms of delivering a coherent (and interesting) narrative that was perfectly married with gameplay. It was a pioneer in it's field. That's why people remember it. The thing about Valve is that they make fairly mediocre (but technically solid) games with conventional (mostly) mechanics, and then bestow them with perfectly paced, engaging, amazing level design.
if facepunch did a poll i'm sure a lot of people would rage at the difference of opinion too. a lot of the users here are here because of half-life and garry's mod, even though those of us with a brain know that those games are really just insanely average
Average? HL2's big competitors when it came out were Doom 3 and Halo 2. It was years ahead of the industry, and Garry's mod is still unique [sp]jbmod doesn't count[/sp]
Hell even the AI is pretty decent. I play games to this day that don't match the AI of Half Life or Half Life 2.
Wow, I didn't even notice it doesn't have Thief: TDP or Metal age. Are they serious? Those are still 2 of the best stealth games ever. Seriously, I have never seen a game that comes close to recreating the same stealth experience that Thief and T2 give you
lol, ocarina of time at 6 and not 1
No Quake? Or even any game from the series? Weak.
My thoughts exactly. Seriously... what the FUCK
Stop flaming on reddit because your favorite game is not in the list. Your opinon doesn't reflect everything.
This is /V/'s list, apparently. I don't agree with everything but hey, it's better than Reddit's list in my opinion.
Oh I forgot about Total Annihilation I'm going to play that now.
I thought Fallout 3 was better than FNV personally. ;-; Does anyone agree with me? Just thought the storyline was way better and the area was way more fun to explore.
I thought Fallout 3 was better than FNV personally. ;-; Does anyone agree with me? Just thought the storyline was way better and the area was way more fun to explore.
I thought the setting was better, but preferred everything else New Vegas did.
lol Battlefield 3 and Halo 2 over MGS3. Thanks OP this is the funniest thing I've seen all week.
Metal Gear Solid 3 at #90 made me burst a fucking blood vessel
obv yes, now name me a game that'd be worth replaying.
Dungeon Keeper. [editline]13th July 2012[/editline] or it would be if EA didn't shit all over Bullfrog
lol I already mentioned MP, I forgot
also no Max Payne at all, seriously? Fuck you guys
Jesus man, why are you getting so mad about this list? Yes, you don't like it, get over it.
Stop flaming on reddit because your favorite game is not in the list. Your opinon doesn't reflect everything.
We are discussing the list. Of course not everyone is going to agree with it. Also, it doesn't help that reddit picked pretty much all of the popular games.
We are discussing the list. Of course not everyone is going to agree with it. ITT: No one ever agrees with this kind of list of games. Generally I usually put older classics a little higher in my own lists like this because of their influence on later games and genres, but that's my opinion.
lol, ocarina of time at 6 and not 1
I will never understand why people like that game so much
Deus Ex: HR at 83? wat
I will never understand why people like that game so much
you had to be young, that's the only time it'll capture you.
yeah i can understand how people that have never played it before can enjoy it but when you play it when it came out as a young kid it's really fucking cool. when you come back to it in the year 2012 it's literally the biggest most ill-conceived piece of crap ever. i can't even get to hells kitchen without dying of boredom. it's such a shame. i can't speak for everybody but oh my god, it's so boring. same goes for thief in a way. it was really intense when it first came out but it's seriously irritatingly lame just think, though. in another decade we're all going to look back and think of games that set the bar now with original story and interesting storytelling methods (like mass effect for example) and be like WOW THIS GAME IS PLAYS LIKE DONKEY DOO-DOO
what the fuck are you going on about seriously I played the game less than a year ago and it's my all-time favorite now. Its diversity, choices, etc. all blend together to make an astounding game. The storyline's brilliant and actually had me surprised at a few bits, and is one of the first games to make me think of moral reasons for doing things. The game is full of little secrets and such, and while it may have some things that irritate me or are badly executed, the overall experience is so good that I would still overlook the flaws and call it my favorite game ever.
i think that just means you have the imagination and patience to look past its flaws i certainly don't
you had to be young, that's the only time it'll capture you.
No, fuck that shit. I played the game for the first time when I was young and I liked it, but nowadays I still don't get why it's so damn popular. It was cool for its time and all, but really I just can't see how its loved SO much. It's great and all, but I wouldn't place it in my Top 10. Maybe Top 100, but still. It's not even the best Legend of Zelda in my opinion. I thought Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were the best, and I'd place those as some of my favorite games, but not Ocarina. [editline]14th July 2012[/editline]
i think that just means you have the imagination and patience to look past its flaws i certainly don't
In that regard we should say Tetris is the best game ever because it is so simple it has no flaws. Or Portal 1. Thing is, who cares about god damn flaws as long as the overall experience is great. Lack of flaws don't make a game great, but rather what's done RIGHT.
I thought Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were the best
no i'm sorry you're just absolutely wrong, and you are a bad person for thinking that. A link to the past and ocarina of time were the best ones. stop now before you hurt someone [editline]14th July 2012[/editline]
In that regard we should say Tetris is the best game ever
yes we should we should say Tetris is the best game ever, once a day
The Zelda games are mechanically solid and have decent stories and characters, overall pretty good games, but the reason they always place so high on lists is because the age of the people making those lists falls right in line with people who would have played the older Zelda games when they were young, and the 64 games in particular were fucking mindblowing to me at the time. I thought it was the apex of my gaming experience.

No Mother 3, and Earthbound is at the very end of the list. Okay there are opinions and there are facts and the facts are that Mother 3 should be near the top of that list and Earthbound shouldn't be far behind.
no i'm sorry you're just absolutely wrong, and you are a bad person for thinking that. WW isn't my favorite game but I still believe it to be one of the prettiest games I've played.

[editline]14th July 2012[/editline]
WW isn't my favorite game but I still believe it to be one of the prettiest games I've played.
The graphics have aged surprisingly well, ignoring Anti-Aliasing.
