tbh you could compare half-life to daikatana. sure, they came out at different years but both games have god-awful AI and pretty average visuals at the time. if it wasn't for the modding scene and enormous amounts of advertising from gaming magazines, nobody would even think about half-life.
it's kind of like blood or MDK. those games were all over gaming mags at the time. unfortunately MDK has been pretty much long forgotten

Half-Life 1 had a lot of FPS 'firsts,' and there's a lot more to games than AI and visuals. For it's time, Half-Life stood head-and-shoulders above the rest in terms of delivering a coherent (and interesting) narrative that was perfectly married with gameplay. It was a pioneer in it's field. That's why people remember it.
The thing about Valve is that they make fairly mediocre (but technically solid) games with conventional (mostly) mechanics, and then bestow them with perfectly paced, engaging, [i]amazing[/i] level design.

Hell even the AI is pretty decent. I play games to this day that don't match the AI of Half Life or Half Life 2.
Wow, I didn't even notice it doesn't have Thief: TDP or Metal age. Are they serious? Those are still 2 of the best stealth games ever.

ITT: No one ever agrees with this kind of list of games. Generally I usually put older classics a little higher in my own lists like this because of their influence on later games and genres, but that's my opinion.

I played the game less than a year ago and it's my all-time favorite now. Its diversity, choices, etc. all blend together to make an astounding game. The storyline's brilliant and actually had me surprised at a few bits, and is one of the first games to make me think of moral reasons for doing things. The game is full of little secrets and such, and while it may have some things that irritate me or are badly executed, the overall experience is [I]so[/I] good that I would still overlook the flaws and call it my favorite game ever.

I played the game for the first time when I was young and I liked it, but nowadays I still don't get why it's so damn popular. It was cool for its time and all, but really I just can't see how its loved SO much. It's great and all, but I wouldn't place it in my Top 10. Maybe Top 100, but still. It's not even the best Legend of Zelda in my opinion. I thought Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were the best, and I'd place those as some of my favorite games, but not Ocarina.

The Zelda games are mechanically solid and have decent stories and characters, overall pretty good games, but the reason they always place so high on lists is because the age of the people making those lists falls right in line with people who would have played the older Zelda games when they were young, and the 64 games in particular were fucking mindblowing to me at the time. I thought it was the apex of my gaming experience.

Yeah, I suppose so. I mean, I'm 16 and had a 64 when I was younger and played Zelda, but I just think they're not the greatest games ever.
No Mother 3, and Earthbound is at the very end of the list. Okay there are opinions and there are facts and the facts are that Mother 3 should be near the top of that list and Earthbound shouldn't be far behind.
