Ok. Format:

Looked fine to me, the UAHHAHA kinda got annoying so I ended the video.
Wow you're pretty damn cocky for an amateur mapper.

I'm not an amateur, I just don't release everything I do because people on FP are waaaay too critical if the subject is anything less that ValvE-like. I've been mapping for yeaaaaaaaarss.

You are an amateur. You released a map that was nothing but a shit displacement, a river and an empty skybox (Militia HDR anyone?) and got angry when people told you it was shit. You don't accept any criticism, when people tell you it fucking sucks you say "NOT IF U UNDERSTAND WAT IS HAPENED" and ignore their suggestions. Get out.
I'm sorry but I have to agree with what everyone else is saying, you're not a very good mapper. It matters little how long you've been mapping for. You could be mapping for two months and be creating beautiful pieces of work. You may have been mapping for years but your maps aren't too good.
On the first video, the intro cutscene was basically just ripped and copied straight out of other Half-Life maps, and then slapped right onto each other. After that, the mapping was very iffy and blocky, and un-detailed. Nothing seemed to have a purpose, especially the door on the floor that lead to a rocky area with a vent. And then vent looked awkward to get into, you were stuck in it for ages. After that the puzzles looked awkward. For someone who is new to the game (Or that map even) wouldn't have known what they were doing, it's mostly just guessing what to put where and what switches to flick which is absolute suicide in game design. Plus you had to turn on light switches to make light in the rooms. Areas should either have light or require a flashlight to see in them, not having you to go pacing the walls in darkness until you find a light switch.
Again, the Portal map was bad design. It was not in the slightest like Portal's actual game design. The environments and test chambers are about cleanliness and readability. Your environments were awkward and dark and cramped and had no visual clues or guidelines for what you were supposed to do or which way you were meant to go. Plus they were triangle for whatever reason. Again, suicide in game design.
It might seem harsh but if I were you I'd seriously practice more. Really study the game design and how maps are designed, what game designers use for visual clues and hints and detail and texture application. Practice making environments make sense. THEN you can put your learnt skills into practice with much better results. Don't copy something good and put it in your own average designed map, it looks very bad.
Watch, lew, as he replies to EVERY. SINGLE. POINT. in your post with the response "well the map is not finished yet so fuck you!"
seems to be his ONLY response to actual constructive criticism

To true.
Also I remember that map with a few trees and a river... Oh man that sucked, was that him?

Constructive? Noone but Lew told me anything except "bad".

The intro was Gordon dreaming. Are you implying I decompiled Episode 2 maps to get the vorts? I did not. It's blocky because it's a house. The rocky area... I shall expand that into... the basement. The vent was blocked by a bit of displacement, if you bothered to read the chat logs. If you played Episode 1, you would see what happened. In fact, you had to do something similar to this - twice. There was one part where you had to plug different wires in to who knows where, and earlier, you had to keep going around and switching on power boxes. The light switches... well, you don't need to turn them on. You were asleep, so you turned them off... Flashlight. You don't have the HEV suit yet.
It's BTS. I explained this in the chat log.
The odd architecture - this was an older part of A.S. when things were based on triangles, not squares. Going to make custom textures later. The portal one really isn't that far, so hang on with the "don't know what to do" bit. It will come together soon.
Thank you for actually saying what was wrong.

I'm not gonna comment on your actual map work, your already got enough comments on that. and you really should just listen to them and do something with it apart from saying;
I have been cresting maps for years, You haven't created anything better, etc
I'm gonna comment on the video's.
First of all, LAG. Make sure the footage doesn't come out laggy. Either lower quality or render it. If you don't know how to render just look up some tutorials.
Second, less fucking around. Show what you're supposed to do in the maps instead of randomly hitting stuff.
Okay I'm still gonna say something about the map. About the hl2 map in the beginning when you get up. No living being makes a complete fluid spin when getting up out of bed/sleep.

Okay, Your maps are extremely blocky, and the lighting is unaltered throughout. Why exactly are there lights within an air vent? If these are test maps then why post them, no one posts there tests, only the final product, or a WIP thread showing progress. You said this is a test, so no going back on that. Also, you are VERY arrogant.

I said the pictures at the top are a combine reactor test.
The icon for this IS WIP.
There's a reason why almost everybody is saying that your maps are poor. Most people are trying to tell you whats wrong with them, but you dodge around them. A lot of people are saying that the story doesn't make any sense. You dodge around that saying that "It does make sense!". It might make sense to you, but you have to present in a clear way to the audience. I'm pretty sure when people make stories for movies, they aren't like "well it makes sense to me, that means everybody will understand it". Also, The maps seem blocky, and the textures don't look....right.
Good luck with the maps, and I hope that you will start listening to some of the criticism.
I've been mapping for years.
I believe this is the third time:
Tell me why you don't like it!
Dan, if you've been mapping for years, and I've been mapping for only about 3 months, how does this turn out?

and this?

Just because you've been mapping for "years" doesn't mean your pro. You don't need to take everything offensive, take it more as a very criticism comment. I've been shot down a lot of times, but I didn't rage.
So Dan, I can do better than you.

I said "I don't release everything I do."
You know what, everyone? I'm going to stop replying like this unless it's a constructive comment, like Lew's. Make of this what you will; I will continue as planned throughout.

I didn't say that either. Both of those maps were never released.
If you wern't going to release any of the stuff in the OP, why did you post it at all?
You should just post images of what you've made before, something more complete.
Then again you could easily be lying about the whole thing and know your maps are shit and that you would receive more criticism.
One thing bothers me in the HL2 map..
Why the hell there's burning combine generator (?) in an attic boarded up above the closet.
I said "I don't release everything I do."
Show us your best map, if this isn't your best why did you pick it to show to the public, ie, us?

The videos? That's like, 88% Complete for this area. I honestly think I make great maps, really. I do think so..

Best map of what category? Uh, I think this would be one of my best (and only almost completed) maps with a storyline (HL2 one)
One thing bothers me in the HL2 map..

Not a combine genny. This was a small lab owned by a new character - a rebel. Kinda like Kliener.
Hi can I be the ideas guy ?

Then you're not a good mapper. Just freakin' compare it to Valve maps, even if you're not a pro mapper, it should at least look like Valve maps. But it doesn't. Stop being cocky.
My mistake. I replyed to the wrong one. Of course it's blocky! What house is made of circles?!
What he means is that the geometry of your house is very low quality. For example, the bannister. You could have added a brush on top and add a wood texture to make it look like a bannister.
That was a really cocky response you made.
What house is made of circles?!
What Portal Testchamber is made of triangles.
This is a "test" and a "work in progress".
Your arguments are invalid.
So if the Arctic Escape video is just a test for a reactor, do you mind showing us what the rest of the level looks like?
