Everyone says this sale was less intense because of what happened in the winter sale but I completely took a break from gaming for about a year so I missed it. What exactly was it?

Every day brought a new set of achievements to earn in multiple games. Every achievement you earned would either win you a game, a coupon or a piece of coal. 7 pieces of coal could be converted into a random coupon or game. Coal could be saved up to be used for a massive draw at the end of the sale in which you could win every game on Steam.
And this was on top of the regular metric fuckton of daily deals.

Every day had at least 1 achievement that could be obtained with no games. People would create new accounts to get those achievements and farm coal.

Sounds about right. Were they tradable or something? Couldn't they just do that again but with a restriction of needing to have $100 worth of games on the account or something? Though I suppose that would turn off people interested in Steam because of the sale.

Yeah, coals were indeed tradeable and had their own bloody economy at the time, it was insane what some people would trade for a few coals. I reckon a simple account value restriction would work fine to prevent such events. It wouldn't stop it by any stretch of the imagination but it would certainly cut the numbers by quite a bit.

Yeah, they were tradable, but iirc only if the account you had had a paid game on there, however people kept buying Humble Bundles for 1 cent (it was going on during this, mind you) and using that to make their accounts premium (which is why you have to pay at least $1 for the steam keys now).

There was also a Humble Bundle going on at the time and a couple of the games in there had achievements.
