Like inebriaticxp said, play the basic Arma2 tutorials. Turn off post-processing effects, as it only messes up your game, and make sure your 3D resolution and monitor resolution are the same or else you might experience a lot of framerate issues.

I decided to play again after a month or so of not playing and I spawned with a makarov with no makarov mags, an akm with 1 mag and 31 zombies killed.
This would all be fine and dandy.
If I didn't stop playing because that character died. DUN DUN DUUUN

First rule of DayZ is be prepared to lose your shit
It's not even that hard to get it all back, a half hour/one hour run in a major city will net you everything you need sans military grade weapons and NVGs

Even then, military grade weapons can easily be obtained via deerstands, military camps (Balota, Cherno, Berezino) and firestations.

Playing DayZ has got me to want to learn how to actually shoot a gun and go camping. hahaha.
This is more of an issue with Arma 2 itself, but I can't find a solution for this anywhere.
When I start Arma 2 OA without any launch options, it loads and loads and then crashes with "error creating Direct3D 9 graphical engine"
I've seen plenty of people say it has something to do with beta and trying to play it with a mod or something, but I don't even have 1.61 beta and it's doing this. I can launch DayZ just fine, but I can't join any servers. It either kicks me or says something about removing files or downloading additional keys accepted by the server.
Every possible issue one could have with this game has happened within the course of a day...

I saved a guy from a zombie by running past the zombie and diverting its attention to me.
Stupid move I know, but luckily in a building I found a smoke grenade and used that to momentarilly distract it and make my escape.
Hope that guy does well.
Wow, so I'm raiding the NW airfield in some server finding nothing but magazines for my AKM because the northern barracks is all barbed wired, the fire station was empty save for one makarov magazine, and the hangers were empty except for a Glock and an AKM so I sprint across the airfield into the southern barracks. I'm sneaking into the area around the barracks when I aggro a zombie. Not bad I can fight it off inside the barracks. Well nope because for some reason there are 5 zombies blocking the fucking way so I have to force aggro them out then try running back into the bathroom. I end up killing 50 zombies and go ahead to loot the building but find nothing but bandages and empty cans. I come out of the barracks and turn right when I see all this random ass loot by the side of the barracks. Mostly ammo I don't need and only one shotgun. Aggro another zombie by accident so I run back into the barracks. I'm hoping over that stupid bench when some server-hopping pussy spawns at the end of the hallway and opens up on me.
Raiding an empty airfield, blocked by barbed wires, killing fifty random fucking zombies that kept spawning, and some server hopper that killed me to top it all off. What an unfortunate day for me.

There are 2 FN Fals south of Progorevka with about 3 mags.
Im sticking with the m14 and bizon.
Also another one on the west with a bizon with no ammo and med supplies
