I'd quite like to start playing on the FP server but it will probably be when we die and lose our car, bike and all of our shit in camp on the server we currently play. Really getting into DayZ now that I started playing with friends and we are getting a nice little camp set up, it feels much more meaningful than running around with no bag space until you die. I also record every session we play and sift through the 300-500gb files for the best bits.

My friend jumped out the car while it was moving and got pretty mangled earlier:

We also found a tractor that was badly smashed up in the middle of the road, red engine/hull but it had fuel and was functioning. We were in the long process of moving it back to our campsite when my friend got that annoying bug or whatever where it keeps forcing you to turn right when you first get in a vehicle:

Needless to say hes pretty damn unlucky, he has died 4-5 times since we found the car two days ago, its just a good job we always travel in a group so we can quickly scoop gear up and pick people up.
Met up with a friend, trekked around... almost starved to death, but I went for broke and left my crap with him and went scouting in Chernogorsk for the supermarket. Then we went north and holed up in a castle, shit was sweet... we had food, barbed wire in the door, unlit campfire floating a story above everything, a perfect view... and then I fell two stories and died. and was ALMOST back when the server restarted.
Fuck everything, I'm going to bed.
Trying to loot and a motherfucker shoots me. I pass out. I wake up with 117 blood left on the roof of a military building. Look inside the tower through a window and
SHOTGUN!
I grab it through the window, and open fire on the motherfucker that shot me, throwing flares and chemlights all the while, attracting dozens of zombies to both of our positions. Meanwhile he wasted three (I'm guessing) grenades trying desperately to hit me from around a corner, attracting the entire god damn town. He panics and runs and gets mauled by zeds.
I leap off the building to my death.
No regrets.

I need immediate medical assistance with morphine in Berezino, in one of the apartment blocks near the supermarket. I got attacked by a zombie and the bastard broke my leg. Is anyone near Berezino and has morphine with him?
Welp i respawned at balota grabbed an akm and ran into cherno, tangled with some zombies along the way so i asked if anyone wanted to give me a blood transfusion says sure ill give you one i have loads

So i wait for him on top of the hospital and see him go into an apartment building, spray him with bullets and watch him desperately try to bandage, at this time i find that the windows are apparently bulletproof

I figure they had killed him so I mosey on down over to him when FUCKING BANG GOES A SHOTGUN I freak out but hear the his empty shotgun 'click' so i just walk out and spray that stingy cunt with half a mag of akm
Now i have his alice, all his tools etc
Just spent 2 hours crawling through a field of snipers then to get shot in the head :(
Server I think needs to be restarted, get stuck on the waiting for host. Course I am going to bed soo...
Anyway Got a Exam, did not study but i am getting a A so can't care, plus I can't use it to get into post secondary for whatever. Should have taken english 12 instead of communications 12.
Server restarted at night, no one joins. Felt nice having a mostly empty server to myself, and I even found a camping tent in Berezino supermarket!
Time to live in the woods.

I just saved my leg with morphine in Berezino, I am near the supermarket. Tell me if you need someone to survive with, I have a large variety of tools, including hunting knife, matches, hatchet, 2 flashlights, map and compass. :)

So, I've finally gotten the game working. What are some beginner tips now that we don't start with weapons? I haven't found any supplies at all in about an hour. Also how do I equip my flashlight?

Five minutes later I murdered someone in cold blood and stole they beans.
This game has gone from suckfest 2012 to amazing in five minutes.
What actually happens when you pick up jerry cans, tires, etc. Do they immediately go into your inventory? How many slots do they take up?

engine and tires take up 6 slots, fuel tank takes up 4, scrap metal and jerry cans take up 3, and windscreen takes up 2

Strictly speaking I don't think I should technically be able to run ArmA2 or OA at all because the graphics card on this thing (the integrated Intel HD 3000) is pretty meh. Runs Source games at max, everything above that usually stutters unless it's all shunted to the absolute minimum settings.

Go read the DayZ forum sticky posts; there's a backpack/inventory management guide in there, and that'll answer your flashlight question and also prevent many 'oh god I just deleted my gun' moments.
As for beginner tips?
Use an online [URL="http://dayzmap.info"]map[/URL] if you have to, but really just move along the coast, exploring enterable buildings for a while until you find a firearm. Avoid crossbows, they're rubbish.
Either find a group of people to join (people in here seem pretty friendly), or head north and explore towns. Look for supermarkets, avoid military bases unless you're sure there's no one around, and make sure you endeavor to find a bigger backpack.
But above all, stealth is vital.
shoot people when they are not looking. the grass layer hides you if you prone at a long enough distance (you can see the effect by observing far zombies or players whose feet are "sunken" into the ground to simulate being covered by low foliage)
players also can take a somewhat unrealistic amount of punishment, prefer snipers or rifles for pvp because ak 74s and m4s are pretty weak compared to the enfield and such. AKM/AKS is a decent middle ground.
You will probably never be shooting full auto anyways unless you are very close with a gun too weak to take the enemy out in one shot.
Edit: also machineguns rule in arma 2 overall, only snipers can be potentially better in some specific situations.
Looking forward to playing this as a loner, using my scout/sniper/cqb skills I used to have.
