When building workshops, look for darker green squares. These obstruct dwarves movement. I didn't know this early on in the game, and I lost a Dwarf who was in a Fey mood cause he couldn't get out...

what do pepole think is more awsome a pyramid made out of solid gold or one made out of green glass :V
what do pepole think is more awsome a pyramid made out of solid gold or one made out of green glass :V
Glass > Gold, both in looks and difficulty.
Glass > Gold, both in looks and difficulty.
What. You can get unlimited glass.
Sop I just started this and I'm kind of getting it but still confused as fuck

Jesus, why did they put in so much binding? It would be easier if it was point and click not *20 commands on screen, press one, 20 more commands pop up*.
Zerorar, I prefer the bindings. I hate having to use a mouse. With bindings, I can prop my head up on the palm of my hand and be cosy, then use the other for EVERYTHING else. Plus, since the human brain is so powerful, you end up learning all the commands pretty darn well after a few hours of playing. I know basically all the commands, just a few I don't, such as in the build menu, I dunno what the bind is for Support, and in Workshops, I keep forgetting the bind for a Fishery thingy :p
Jesus, why did they put in so much binding? It would be easier if it was point and click not *20 commands on screen, press one, 20 more commands pop up*.
Using the keyboard-only (pretty much, let's be honest) interface in this game is hard at first. It's one of the two big things people complain about. But getting a fortress that survives (as far as supplying your dwarves goes) is actually really easy, because any dwarf can do any job, even if he has no skill in it. If you had the viewing area surrounded by mouse buttons to do everything, you'd probably end up using binds more than mouse anyway by the time you make your second successful fortress, so you just have to get around the initial frustration of not having everything clickable.

Well this sucks I decided to play some DF while I'm visiting my mum and this few-months-old laptop does the offloading world units thing (after world gen) at about 15 units per second Looks like no DF for me until I get back home
[b] -> [z], motherfucker. >.>
Actually, b-->w-->z.
I'm starting to get into the game, how do I make the dwarfs pick up the battle axe and cut down the tree I'm trying to designation. And how do I get the anvil inside?
And Orkel rises from the dead and makes everyone happy again. Where you been, Orkel? This thread has been empty without your superior input.
Whaddya mean? I've been lurking here all the time. I always read all the posts. I'm just waiting for the new version.
Oh right.
I'm starting to get into the game, how do I make the dwarfs pick up the battle axe and cut down the tree I'm trying to designation. And how do I get the anvil inside?
I presume you have an area of trees already designated for cutting down? You need to give one of your dwarves the woodcutting labour. Labour and skill are completely independent, any dwarf can take any job with no experience (but will do it slowly and with less quality). To change what labour a dwarf has, press V to enter the view creature mode, go over a dwarf, then press P > L. Then highlight woodcutting (+ and - on the numpad scrolls). As for getting the anvil inside, for stockpiling reasons it counts as furniture. So make a furniture stockpile inside and wait for them to haul it over.
The next version wont come for a few months
[b] -> [z], motherfucker. >.>
I know all of the keys, or at least I used to. I've forgotten a lot of them now.
Why does it lag? Windows 7 fault?
It's a very system intensive game, as weird as that might seem.
It's a very system intensive game, as weird as that might seem.
If it had 3D graphics it'd be the new GTA IV. (Not the game, the system spechs)
It's very CPU dependent and it doesn't have support for multi-processors. That's why it lags and runs poorly when you have 80+ Dwarfs.
Why does it lag? Windows 7 fault?
I do think performance is crippled a bit on Win7, but it's a long time since I played it on XP so I can't tell for sure.
Started a new fortress. It's a flat, terrifying savanna, with a single river at the west side. OH DEAR GOD THERE'S UNDEAD CAMEL EVERYWHERE OH GOD HELP ME
If it had 3D graphics it'd be the new GTA IV. (Not the game, the system spechs)
Not really, if the 3d grapics where really 2d and didn't move.

On my laptop it was unplayable, but the OpenGL version on a flat map was fine. Just set CPU affinity to DF
