Jesus fucking christ. My sheriff had to kill a kid. I wasn't paying attention so I didn't realize that the kid was in a fey mood. He went berserk and the sheriff took off his left and and cut his torso in half. He stared at the body for 2 days straight throwing random tantrums. He's been nothing but miserable since then, just throwing tantrums every once in a while. Heavy stuff. [editline]09:00PM[/editline] Holy fuck, he keeps going over to the body to look at it. He must be depressed as fuck. It's all he does. He hasn't slept since the accident.
Bury it.

Raccoons are literally assaulting my fort. At least 10 have tried to get in and steal shit. Luckily, I have a hunter (proficient marksdwarf/proficient ambusher) who's also been practicing his wrestling on the batmen and swallowmen the occupy the nearby pit. I activated him and stuck him outside the entrance. Every time I go check on him, I find that he's ripped another raccoon up. Sometimes the legs/arms are 3 squares away from the rest of the body. I was lucky enough to see him break one's legs, knock it unconscious, then rip it in half. Protip: If you embark with a dwarf that has only social skills, give him novice ambushing. You'll get a free set of armor, a crossbow, and 30 bolts. Just disable the hunting labor once you embark. Any dwarf which has ambushing as his highest non-social skill will embark with a set of this equipment for free.
Download this, hopefully it'll be easier to figure what's what.
Does anyone else recommend this? I haven't actually seen anybody using it, I think I can get used to the original look, but just wondering. Also, how exactly, in enough detail, does the combat work? One more thing, is the download off of the wiki the one you guys are using, because some look a little different, is the OpenGL version better or something? Sorry for all of the questions, but I am quite interested!

Also, the combat in Fortress mode is automatic. The dwarfs will automatically fight. The combat itself is quite detailed. Some fights can lead to mangled limbs and dismemberment's. I remember when my Marksdwarf lost his eyes so when he practiced he shot arrows everywhere. And finally the OpenGL version is faster.
Wow thank you sir! Ummm, one more thing, tilesets? Can you change those or something? I noticed my dwarves just kinda looked like E's. Some things weren't visible until I was able to move the cursor to that tile. There was a random dwarf, but it just appeared as " kind of, which was like the surrounding grass. No symbol for him or anything.

With the other moving letters, those are things like animals and flies and stuff. E's are elves. They come with the elven trade caravans.
Wow again, I thank you for your quick and useful input! I will probably be posting more questions here eventually, but for now, this entire game seems brutally detailed, I am really gonna like this a lot! Luckily I am good with letter memorization, so the keybindings should come quickly. Also, one last thing before I head off to bed, it is Midnight-thirty here :P Adventure mode seems interesting, not entirely sure of the gist of it though, the legends (as in symbol explanations) don't currently make sense to me, and my screen likes to cut the bottom left corner's text off for some very odd reason!

Maybe it's a problem with your monitor!

Also yes, you will have fun with this game. Lots and lots of fun. It's a different adventure in every fort. Losing is even fun.

Go into: Dwarf Fortress\data\init\init.txt Make sure [BLACK_SPACE] is set to yes and change the [WINDOWX/Y] resolutions to something bigger than they are. Mine are set at 1024(x) and 768(y) right now. Save it and start the game and start a fortress. Then put you mouse on the screen and scroll, find a good size.
Made a new character, was told to go kill a alligator, gained a few compainions. Went to the cave with it in it. Cyclops was in there too, I ran away while my two companions were raped and found out, Theres no way to get back out. I got fucked.
Here's a picture of my current fortress moments before the mass shit storm. I'm out of food and my farmers and incompetent. Outside is a caged goblin I caught stealing a child. There's a baby in the cage with it but it probably got eaten. Also who likes my room setups?
First time about finding out stuff really work are always the best. Take my first expirence with water pressure. I was looking for water and I knew there was an underground pool on the map, so I dug and dug till I found wet stone. I dug up to reach the water and I unpause and that exact frame my miner starts drowning. I was confused as I thought he was drowining in a 1/7 pool of water, but a few seconds later I check my main fortress to see a river flowing in it, it shot up from the holes I dug for future wells. Luckily for me the dwarves that was not that miner were able to hold refuge in the dining area as all the water flowed down the staircase into my then unoccupied stonemine/craft area. That lasted for about 10 min. until the underground pool finally drained and I had gotten what I want, a good long lasting supply of water, with a bonus, I got trees growing too! Good times.
I don't get how to make an indoor floor?
I don't get how to make an indoor floor?
b > C > num + > enter
b > C > num + > enter
That's an outdoor floor? :( also how do I kill or dry a river?
It works indoor. I pave all my nobles rooms with it.
It works indoor. I pave all my nobles rooms with it.
Doesn't work indoor here, when I try to place a bed it just says it needs to be indoor, I even put walls around the whole building.
Doesn't work indoor here, when I try to place a bed it just says it needs to be indoor, I even put walls around the whole building.
It needs a roof.
It needs a roof.
Yeah yeah how do I build a roof?
Yeah yeah how do I build a roof?
You build a floor above the room.
You build a floor above the room.
Construction preset. How? :v: I kind of locked a dog and a cat together in the same room with no door. The dog is having puppies and the cat is having kitties. What the fuck.
