Okay.
Now how do I build a floor above a floor?
Go one Z-level up.
When I try to build the roof it says I don't have access to building material.

Shift-> goes down a level and Shift-< goes up one. Build a set of upward stairs and directly above it build downward ones, then mine.
Actually, I would suggest running vanilla first, but that's just me. Also, concerning your screen problem. Go into: Dwarf Fortress\data\init\init.txt
Make sure [BLACK_SPACE] is set to yes and change the [WINDOWX/Y] resolutions to something bigger than they are. Mine are set at 1024(x) and 768(y) right now. Save it and start the game and start a fortress.
Then put you mouse on the screen and scroll, find a good size.
Well that sort of worked.. the screen is bigger but it's just black. So the actual game window is the same size as it was. When I put my mouse on the screen and scroll, nothing happends.

Weird. What version are you using?
Hah, this thread is being swarmed by newbies. :v:
I'll try and get as much help as I can from the wiki so that I won't have to bother you guys too much.

No bother at all, I enjoy helping. Could you screen cap what your window looks like?
v.0.28.181.40d I think. Seems like a long name but I suppose it's right.
[editline]08:55AM[/editline]
Ok sec.
I don't have a miner.
What kind of dwarf group has no miner? It's what makes dwarfs dwarfs. You're going to need a miner.

My actual screen is much larger, it's at 1680x1050 so I made the game be 1024x768.
[editline]08:59AM[/editline]
Also, I should really get a tileset, since I find the original one so confusing. :aaaaa:
But I'll get the hang of it when I start reading the wiki. Just want to fix my screen first.

When you scroll your mouse it should resize it so it looks like so:

Oops, I broke the game now. :v: Have to redownload the init file.
[editline]09:01AM[/editline]
I'll try again as soon as I've fixed the game.

Started a new game, I only start with some wood and fisher people. :(
Well.. I started now again and now the window is covered up, but it doesn't seem to look right.
Started a new game, I only start with some wood and fisher people. :(
Start with Miner/Mason, Miner/Judge of Intent/Appraiser, Woodcutter/Carpenter, Grower/Cook, Herbalist/Brewer, Mechanic/Siege Engineer/Siege Operator, and a Weaponsmith/Blacksmith/Furnace Operator.
I'm gonna take a little break from Dwarf Fortress, got some other things to do, all of this advanced res changing is giving me a headache, well.. if I could get headaches that is.
Show me your init.txt in
.

Actually I found it in a stumble.

Where can I change what characters I want to start with?

You need to change your GRID size in the init.txt. The default is 80x25
For a 1680x1050 screen, with the default 8x12 curses character set, the grid size needs to be 210x87.5
200 is the max grid size, 200x87.5 should do it (run in windows mode). Make sure BLACKSPACE is set to Yes.
Where can I change what characters I want to start with?
if you prepare for the jorney carefully you can set their skillz.
Where can I change what characters I want to start with?
When you pick your area to embark with, don't pick "Play Now!". Pick the other option. There the pick each dwarf and choose it's skills. You only get 10 points per dwarf so choose wisely. Then press TAB and choose the items. Increase and decrease them through + and - on the numpad. You know what, just read this: http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Indecisive%27s_illustrated_fortress_mode_tutorial
How do I spawn the bins?
You build them at a carpenter's workshop.
You build them at a carpenter's workshop.
aergergagfdh.
you guys give one tip at a time, it's quite annoying :v:
I already know that, I have a bin already, but how do I put it in a room?
Also my engineer died, I made a casket for him... how do I put him in it?
Dwarves move bins around automatically.
You don't use caskets for dead people, you use coffins. Then you build with [b] -> [N], finally you designate it to be used for burial.
