I never took the time to design those big ass forts you people seem to make I make small cramped ones, also wouldn't that take forever to dig unless it's something like sand?
you have to press enter twice, maybe that's your problem.
I literally just started the dwarf fortress game mode and the first thing I try is dig and I press enter twice after pressing d 2 times before that and It still doesn't work.
Finished it.
what are those big dots in every bedroom
what are those big dots in every bedroom
Rocks.
Well here's my current fortress design (sorry about the tilesets for those who I know dislike them, I just enjoy it more this way) Entrance Housing Complex and dining rooms Food storage and path to noble rooms/catacombs (ignore the bones and drowning dwarf, a lot of people are suicidal at the moment from losing 20 dwarves)

Finally got my fort started off kind of well. I can't tell if they're hungry or not.
Finally got my fort started off kind of well. I can't tell if they're hungry or not.
As long as you have food don't worry about it.
Finally got my fort started off kind of well. I can't tell if they're hungry or not.
Dwarves will automatically grab food when they need it, you can press [z] to check food stocks.
Dwarves will automatically grab food when they need it, you can press [z] to check food stocks.
Unless they're injured and in bed, then a dwarf will come bring food/water (They won't drink booze while injured) to them.
Well I just got to playing on my old fortress, going to go upload it, so I can get some suggestions. [editline]Edit:[/editline] http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-6538-ironchucks Tell me what I need to improve?
Alright, so I'm finally going to download DF tommorow. Is there anything I should know before playing that doesn't include to use the wiki for everything and whatever is in the OP?
Alright, so I'm finally going to download DF tommorow. Is there anything I should know before playing that doesn't include to use the wiki for everything and whatever is in the OP?
Have fun. :buddy:
Every problem can be solved with magma.
Except entire fortress loss due to magma.
Avoid aquifers and elephants like the plague.
Avoid aquifers and elephants like the plague.
Elephants? You forget that they were put on prozac and hardly conflict with dwarves (apart from hunters). Skeleton and zombie elephants are another story... You should really worry about major rivers where carp and longnose gnars reside (mostly carp though, as they have the power to drag dwarves into the water).
Avoid aquifers and carp like the plague.
Fixed. Edit: GODDAMNIT :ninja:
Except entire fortress loss due to magma.
Except that.
go for aquifiers and elephants like a kid on candy

[editline]Edit:[/editline] http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-6538-ironchucks Tell me what I need to improve?
Looks like a good fort. Here is what I would change. (The advise below is based on my own play style and may not work for you.) Take your bone and shell piles inside! You will need to mess with editing stockpile settings (disable them on the outdoor refuse pile and create a refuse pile that accepts only bones skulls and shells so it will not stink.) The reason for this advise is many people complain that moody dwarves want shell and they never have any. There appears to be 3 spots where invaders can get in. One is the gate in the wall you built. the other two are the ramps to the sides of the wall, at least the arches can shoot at anyone aproching any of those entrances. Farms that 2x5 farm plot although probably ok for now will need to be expanded later on as you get more dwarves. Workshops: if you find you are making alot of something (eg blocks for a mega-project, crafts to trade) extra shops are better. Future expansion, it never hurts to have the nobles rooms pre-dug and possibly furnished when they arrive. also when times are good and there is some spare dwarf-power available private rooms for each dwarf raises overall happiness. Final note, add points of interest to you your uploaded map as it can help us understand you current plans that are still in progress and find the fort.
Is it possible to build floodgates from above? Here's a diagram: Key: ~ Water - Wall (Side View) --- --- ---~--- -------- (Top View) ------- --~--- --~--- ~~~~~~~ <- River I want to put a floodgate there in the water, because the current one doesn't allow enough water to fill the entire 6x6 farm room with 1/7 water, There's like 3 that have nothing on them. I want to allow for more water. Using a system which allows water to flow into a reserve, and then the river is blocked off, and the water is let into the farm's room. Anyways, can you build Floodgates from above.
I never see any goblins or anything like that when I'm playing. =(

Cause you can't do that, it has to be hand placed after all, which is impossible in 7/7 water.
A second mode for DF would be nice. Survival - you have two years to set up a fortress before wave after wave of ugly nasties come stroming at you. they appear at least twice every season and you just have to hold out for as long as possible. Elelephants are back to their bloodlusty ways and goblins are having a special two for one offer on all their soldiers.
Is it possible to put something else there to block the water then? I want to put the floodgate in the up most water tile in the top diagram. The top circled tile is directly above the bottom circled tile.
I never see any goblins or anything like that when I'm playing. =(
Goblin snatchers come by at around 50 dwarfs, sieges start at 80.
Is it possible to put something else there to block the water then? (you can place floodgates in 1/7 also) Or if you have magma you could always try to divert a bit of that into the water to make obsidian. Another more experimental and less logical thing to do would be to cause a mass cave in in the area using supports linked to levers. I think it'd have to be like 4 or 5 stories tall though cause most of the debris doesn't stay solid rock wall.
