Dwarf Fortress - Mom, why are those Elves eating each other?

I'm going to start with the "Your first fortress tutorial" now, but I still can't fix my damn screen issue, can't anyone give me an init file that puts the games res at 1024x768, because I can't do it without messing it up. :frown:
Why won't anyone butcher the fucking animals designated for butchering? Do they have to be caged or uncaged?
uncaged.
is there a butcher available?
Also are there any good tilesets, because I find the stuff rather confusing otherwise. Something that makes the dwarves look like well.. dwarves, think I saw some tileset a while ago that did this.
You need a butchers shop and a dwarf with the butchering labour enabled.
Edit:

You are probably refering to the mayday graphics set. But I have bad news for you it does fit on your screen size. You can also look at the other tile and graphic sets here

Look it up on the Wiki.
I use Mayday's.
uncaged.

I turn off every other labor except butchery, but then he just sits there with no job. Is there a special weapon needed for butchering?
Looks like a good fort. Here is what I would change. (The advise below is based on my own play style and may not work for you.)
Take your bone and shell piles inside! You will need to mess with editing stockpile settings (disable them on the outdoor refuse pile and create a refuse pile that accepts only bones skulls and shells so it will not stink.) The reason for this advise is many people complain that moody dwarves want shell and they never have any.
There appears to be 3 spots where invaders can get in. One is the gate in the wall you built. the other two are the ramps to the sides of the wall, at least the arches can shoot at anyone aproching any of those entrances.
Farms that 2x5 farm plot although probably ok for now will need to be expanded later on as you get more dwarves.
Workshops: if you find you are making alot of something (eg blocks for a mega-project, crafts to trade) extra shops are better.
Future expansion, it never hurts to have the nobles rooms pre-dug and possibly furnished when they arrive. also when times are good and there is some spare dwarf-power available private rooms for each dwarf raises overall happiness.
Final note, add points of interest to you your uploaded map as it can help us understand you current plans that are still in progress and find the fort.
I already got my refuse and such outside. I should of added points of interest. Also, the gate has flood gates(currently up) attached to a lever. However, thanks to your advice, I'll go build a new wing with some rooms/new workshops. I cannot really expand much with the farm, since I have limited soil.

Should I search for tilesets? Because then I just find this article on what they are.

My exploratory mining expedition has ground to a halt. Reason being, it's so far away by the time my miners get there they run off again to get a drink.
I find ASCII easier to read then tilesets. With ASCII, "c" is a cat. With a tileset like Mayday, the cat sprite generally blends in and looks like a blob and I don't know if it's a cat or not.
^Don't start the fucking argument again.
I kind of don't understand why we keep going back to tilesets.
If you like them, good. If you don't like them, keep your cock shut and stop pretending like you're somehow a super elite gamer.
Exactly. This is about to turn into the "PC VS CONSOLE" of the other thread, when the whole argument could have been avoided if people just agreed to stick to what they prefer.

I can't say I'm very surprised there are tileset elitists, in a previous thread someone said the game itself was a natural selection type thing, saying that only those who persevered beyond the initial frustration would be rewarded with the fun of the game.
Well yeah, it's fun once you get around the unorthodox graphics and interface, but there's no need to think yourself superior because you did.
Well like I already stated, I'm sure I'm not the only one that changed from default to tileset after I had already figured the entire game out.

Wait, it won't fit as in that my screen is too small? Well.. my screen is 22inch and I have a desktop res of 1680x1050, :v: but I figred 1024x768 should be enough for DF. Or did you mean the other way around?

Oh, I get it. The tileset elitist is telling ASCII elitists to shut up because they're being elitist.
Do we really need to have this argument multiple times in every DF thread?
I don't want to argue about this. I dropped the issue awhile ago. I'm not the one who keeps bringing it up.

Yeah, that'd be correct, except no one but the ASCII elitists are even REMOTELY bringing it up. (I don't even think tileset elitists exist)
If you couldn't tell, I actually defended you on the last page.

In conclusion, yeah man. I'm like totally elitist.
Keep making a spark from a post that was meant to DIFFUSE a situation. Either way it's a game, just a game.

You just did bring it up for absolutely no reason.

Sorry I thought you had a desktop size of 1024x768 as yours is a nice big one it will fit with room to spare.

Yay! :buddy:
I just need to fix my damn res issue.
[editline]10:32PM[/editline]
As in the game not filling up the entire space, and when it does it looks messed up. I can't fix it no matter what I do.
So how come there's tons of new players and an active thread? Did they release the new version??
No, just a beta of an update, which has real-time zooming and scrolling. It's nifty but not all that useful if you ask me. Has SDL now or something.

Yeah, although that is somewhat offset by things like E which can mean any number of things.
I prefer ASCII just because it gives you double the available grid size. You need a res of 1280x600 just to run the default grid with a graphical, not enough room to see shit.
Although I would recommend anikki over the default, can't stand characters that are taller than they are wide.
My first fort died of dehydration, fucking elven caravans wouldn't give us booze. Started a new maps because the old one had a giant mountain cutting it in half.

I've stayed using Anikki since my turn in the succession game. Love it.

Just found the best spot.

Tetrahedrite vein right there, also the mountain you're seeing is about 49z levels high with a river and trees at the bottom. There's a volcano and HFS somewhere.
I find it more amusing to play as humans and make huge ass towers.
Then secretly making a pit beneath them and collapsing them there while your whole population of 78 is inside.
Don't forget to fill the pit with water. Magma is even better.
I used a titleset at the beginning, too. But now I switched to the original version so I can enjoy some DIGGIN DEEPER.
