Dwarf Fortress - Mom, why are those Elves eating each other?

I've never had a fort where my ponds froze for more than a week and now I got one where my brook and ponds are frozen all year, any way to melt it so I can get some water? We're running out of booze.
I still don't get what the fuck my noble wants, he wants an item.
I gave him an armour stand and a gave him a statue.
Getting bored of my 60+ fort now, plenty of booze, plenty of food, plenty of useless stuff from the goblins. I have 5 legendary wrestlers all ready to kill gobins. Also what do I edit to make demons a playable race in adventure mode.
What Orc mod do you guys use? I want some Orcs! :D
How do you guys control Miasma
You get refuse outside.
How do you guys control Miasma
You make a refuse stockpile.

Fuck ninjad
Fish Cleaner is in a mood, he wasn't very important nor do I have what he's asking for so I just locked him in the workshop he claimed. Time to wait until he goes insane and dies.
Could someone perhaps chat me up over IM (noob_reaperzor@hotmail.com) or steam? (Cogniscente)
I'd like to learn to play but the wiki is confusing.

Put a cage trap inside incase he goes berserk. That way his family and friends won't get bad thoughts because he's in a cage and not dead.

I'm planning on doing this next time a person goes insane:
As soon as person goes in 'a mood', I'll remove his door to his bedroom and place doors and a lever. I'll have someone that suddenly forgets how to haul stand there all the time untill he enters his bedroom, and bam, pull the lever. It's gonna be funnier just seeing him rot up in his bedroom. :3:
[editline]08:50PM[/editline]
What kind of entrance do you guys make?
Mine's a 3 by 1 ironbar/gate thing controlled by a lever, as soon as I'm being ambushed I pull the lever.

I don't see how you guys can't get the material for moody dwarves.
The only sort of hard things to obtain are shells. I always keep leather, cloth, shells, gems, and bones in excess and I have only had 1 berserk dwarf so far.
On a side note, anyone want to take a shot at this problem?
This has been a recurring problem of mine since I started playing, sometimes my dwarves are inable to hook up mechanisms to floodgates to attach them to levers.
They will just sit there trying for about a minute, give up, leave the mechanism there, and wait for a new mechanic to take a shot.

I don't know how to fix it, but that stuff surely looks awesome.
What is the green stuff?
Olivine.
And someone on the Dwarf fortress forum just answered my question.

This is my WIP underground lake/moat.

I managed to get my fish cleaner what he wanted, he made a mediocre harp worth 6000.
On another note, my mayor mandated construction of three maces, but fuck him. We don't have a forge up, or even an anvil to make one.
What was the solution to your answer? Post it so people with it can get the information easily.
If I had a guess, i'd say it's because Dwarves, being the retarded midgets they are, prefer to do a job on one side when it comes to it. So, was the solution to make space so the dwarf could work on all four sides of the floodgate or...?

I thought I had my stuff pretty systemized, this is awesome.

Well, it turns out that connecting floodgates to levers is one of the most time consuming jobs because you have to
1. Get a mechanism from a pile and bring it to a floodgate and hook it up.
2. Go back to the pile and get another to bring it to the lever.
So it turns out dwarves work for so long on a floodgate to lever connection, that they have to seek food or water, they drop what they are doing, and unless both of them are connected, the entire order is undone and must be restarted.
Solution? I just made a custom stockpile near the floodgates and filled it with mechanisms and put the lever closer.
Let's say I want to make a Gate into my Fortress (it's going into a mountain and I was thinking about putting a wall around it on the outside) How would I do this? I was thinking like a Drawbridge. I can get chains.

Rig a bridge to a level.
I feel like killing my Dungeon Master, what the fuck is he useful for anyway.
Blacksmithing and taming of exotic creatures. If he is making to many imposable or expensive demands then the replacement who may have an easier set of preferences may be better.

He's the only useful noble.
He actually works. He's a furnace operator, an animal trainer (He's the only dwarf who can dragons and stuff), an animal caretaker and a metal crafter.

Animal trainer, let's you train exotic pets like cave crocs and giant toads, dragons etc.

Yeah, I don't know why you'd kill him, whenever I get mine I give him a lavish room cause I love him so much.
I like the Dungeon Master too. The tileset I use depicts him with a horned helmet, making me imagine some kind of Viking blacksmith working away in a forge creating awesome weapons.
The fact that he wears a bajillion cloaks whilst he does it only adds to the awesome. :v:
The continuing tale of the fortress Salvecrabs.
I started the summer with the preliminary designing of the main defences for the fort. I am having the flood gates for the farms installed to day so soon we will not be reliant on the river floods. Work on the crafts workshop has begun so we can sell some junk for extra food from any passing merchants.
Flood, the river has flooded. this has had the benefit of irrigating the fields while the flood gates are being installed. but if anyone been on the bridges they would have been lost. A safety system needs to be created at some point.
I noticed that there were a lot of crops ready for harvesting but no one harvesting them so I declared that all dwarves must harvest lest the crop rots. even with the new order no-one seems to want to get the plants, and are now working slowly, but at least the job is getting done. The fact that we are out of boozes does not help matters at all.
The long overdue metal smith and anvil have finally arrived. I haves set him to work on the emergency food system in case we run short despite it not being his field. My desire for booze got worse when I heard that there was a beer festival back at the mountain homes. The hollowing out of the new dining room is going slowly but should be finished by the end of the year.
My desire for booze must have gotten the better of me as i have just ordered the brewing of 3 kegs. Some chairs and tables are now being added to the half dug dining hall. I like a seat as much as a next man when eating plump helmet.
The caravan has been spotted on the horizon heading straight for us, we a filling the deport with all items that we are willing to sell. Which sadly consists of 1 half full finished goods bin, everything else is just too heavy. We encountered a slight problem when trading, None of us knew what anything was worth and the trader refuse to tell us! we made a guess and sold the contents of the bin for as much food as we were able to get away with, I still wonder if we could have afforded the some milk as well.
The dining hall is complete, ok it is a bits short of furniture but it has plenty for the eight of us. I don't believe it, the fools let the food we just bought rot at the depot! I have started making coffins for those who are on thin ice. Beware my wrath. A migrant wave? well at least there is only 7 of them, and they can't be any worse the people already here. The extra miners have really made a difference, tunnelling is not only back up to its old pace but is going even faster. Unfortunately food is starting to look low and some animals will get the chop.
The rest of the year was spent on mining out some defences and moving workshops and stockpiles indoors. There was one minor interruption when the outside river froze over for half a second!

Few problems and questions i've run into.
One- is it possible to UN-cave adapt dwarves? I've dug channels to expose ALL my dwarves to sun at pivotal parts of the fort almost consantly, yet its been like two years and they still keep vomiting. EVERYWHERE. Not to mention the bad thoughts are still coming.
Two- Why won't my dwarves dump goblin bodies i've designated? I'm getting tired of the miasma making everyone disgusted.
I have others, I just forgot a lot of them while writing this for some reason.
Take cave_adapt out of the dwarfs file. I hate it. It's useless and annoying.
Hell, I hardly leave my batcav-- I mean, my bedroom, but I don't start spewing puke all over the place when i'm in direct sunlight.

Though your dwarves will get bad thoughts of "breathing cave-dust" and alike if that is turned off.
