[QUOTE=Appox;16418910]This is stupid don't listen to this guy. You need to create a garbage dump zone, create the zone with 'i', then select garbage dump with 'd'. All item's you then select to dump will be chucked into the garbage dump tile.[/QUOTE] So let me get this straight. stones dont go in stockpiles? Im confused :\
[QUOTE=Jimmymi;16418839]Its like stronghold crusader... you need to make stockpiles (default button "P") and place them outside fort and then when all rock are carried out by the mason or everybody destray the stockpile, make space inside, place stockpile there and viola you have got all your rocks arranged inside your fort in a good place. oh and by the way YOU NEED DEM ROCKS to make shit, weaponsmith thingy can make rock weapons i think.... [editline]09:00PM[/editline] Lets think my post as this. This happened yesterday and i was noting that the game was hard. thanks for the tips btw didnt notice dem links in op[/QUOTE] Thanks! CLEAAAN MY EVIL MINIONS! Feels like I'm playing overlord. :v:
[QUOTE=CommanderPT;16418978] Oh... stockpile worked too, but don't I need stone?[/QUOTE] A garbage dump area can have as many items in a tile as you like, rather than stockpiles which only have one item per tile (unless of course you use containers). Plus, you get more rock than you'll ever need by digging through rock, and you'll end up with lots of stone littered about your fortress. A stone stockpile will only tie up your dwarves when they should be doing something more suited to their profession. That said, I do keep an ore-only stockpile when I have lots of miners and it's not time consuming to dig out big areas anymore. If a dwarf needs stone he'll happily take one of the stone blobs scattered around the fortress.

Press Q, hover over the mason's workshop, then press A to add a new task. Scroll through the options with numpad + and -, then click enter on it to give it as a job. The main Q view on a workshop shows the job queue. You can press R with a task selected to toggle repeat forever. Important things you can make from stone are tables, chairs and doors in the early fortress, all pretty much essential.

TO ARMS! :black101:
How do you make a tower? I tried making a basic 5x5 tower, but I can't make a level past the first overworld level. Should I post a few pictures?

Also, what's the name of a bed, I can't find it, I figured it might have another name since chairs are called thrones. [editline]07:44PM[/editline] Also.. what is Miasma?.. some purple stuff that shows up.

Apart from the artifact beds made in fey moods and such, they can be made of anything. Also to make an multi-storey building above ground you have to make a floor on top of the walls of the ground floor. There's floor tiles already where the walls have been built on the level below. Just fill up the rest of the space with a floor construction. Then you can build more walls on the fully-built floor as normal. It takes a while for a corpse to rot though after the creature dies, though. If you see a tiny purple 2 somewhere, that's a corpse of a small critter like a rat, a lizard or a roach or something. You can designate a refuse stockpile for rotting items (when a corpse rots outside it doesn't generate miasma) and dwarves will haul the items there when they feel like it just as with any stockpile. Dwarves don't like the stench of miasma and will get an unhappy thought if they walk into a tile that has miasma in it.

For some reason I can't hover over the mason's shop and press Q anymore, just says, no buildings around.. when I can see it. [editline]07:51PM[/editline] Or nevermind, fixed it. [editline]07:56PM[/editline] I've made a wood stockpile inside my fortress but the woodcutter doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Cut down some tree's. go 'd' 't' and select an area of trees. Your woodcutter will chop'em up, and somether dwarfs will store the wood.
Also, de-construct your wagon.

[editline]08:11PM[/editline] Hmm, I've come into some dialog screen with some guy from an outpost and I can't do anything.. [editline]08:11PM[/editline] [QUOTE=HALP Cat;16419811]Also, de-construct your wagon.[/QUOTE] Why? I figured I'd wait until I have beds and stuff. [editline]08:16PM[/editline] Now it just went away. Odd.. [editline]08:16PM[/editline] Now something new, what the feck is going on. I can't even talk to him. [editline]08:40PM[/editline] Lots of posts for me but last thing for today (lol), I fixed the trader thing so ignore that. Is it possible to tell dwarves to clear rock without having to select each and everything you want to clear? Like some sort of clear this room automaticly.

[QUOTE=CommanderPT;16418742]So.. after countless restarts, here I am, with my first "fortress". But it seems like I have to restart again, why you ask? SO MUCH STONE, at first I thought I had found gold, but apparently it's something else.. and I can't move it or anything, I made a masons workshop but nobody is there. I even remember that I made a guy mason. Any help? Also, do I count as a real DF player now? :buddy: [editline]06:52PM[/editline] Wops, sorry for the big picture. [editline]06:52PM[/editline] Wait a minute, that picture is outdated, doh.. how odd, anyway, the place next to my miner, to the left, that's where I put the mason's workshop.[/QUOTE] When mining rock, there will always be that much stone.
Wow, we're still over 20 posts from the [B]old[/B] auto-lock point and someone's already tried to snipe my thread. Let's keep it in here eh, guys?
Damnit why do firemen go for the beds first?
Is there any way to dig through the surface? I'm trying to build my fortress above ground this time, and I want to make a moat. I don't want to have to make a ton of traps to prevent thieves and goblins.

[QUOTE=Libertas;16430938]I'm going to assume you mean Channeling? Making a moat trench as it were? That's under designations, as 'h'.[/QUOTE] It won't let me make channels on the surface.
[QUOTE=Appox;16425183]If you mean a way to mass select items to dump then yes. Go 'd' 'b' 'd' and select the area to dump.[/QUOTE] Thanks, I am seriously hooked on Dwarf Fortress now, good use of my new hardware! :v: [editline]10:37AM[/editline] I got a storm of new dwarves that ate all my food, now people are hunting vermin for food and I can't seem to collect plants to eat even though I told my herb guy to do it. Any other way to quickly get some food without waiting for the trader to come? [editline]10:40AM[/editline] Also, a lot of my dwarves have this blue or red arrow that is pointing downwards, I suppose that's no good either. Well, LOSING IS FUN! One guy just drowned and another died from starving..
[QUOTE=CommanderPT;16419825] Why? I figured I'd wait until I have beds and stuff.[/QUOTE] It's useless. You don't need it. You get 3 free logs.

Any easy step by step guide to starting? Other then the Wiki, the Wiki made no sense to me at all.
[QUOTE=CodeMonkey3;16438792]Any easy step by step guide to starting? Other then the Wiki, the Wiki made no sense to me at all.[/QUOTE] I don't see how we could be much clearer than the wiki. [editline]02:07PM[/editline] For some reason my dwarves won't haul food anymore. I've got barrels, room in the stockpile, and food hauling is all turned on, yet they won't do it, why?
You need to put some reserve barrels and make more room for the food. A large empty room would be good for a storage area.
[QUOTE=Ouendanation;16431210]It won't let me make channels on the surface.[/QUOTE] Bull-fucking-shit, i make moats with channels on the surface all the time.
[QUOTE=Zeroarmorclo;16439114]You need to put some reserve barrels and make more room for the food. A large empty room would be good for a storage area.[/QUOTE] I have plenty of empty barrels and room in the stockpile. Ugh, shit, nevermind, just found out why. I accidentally hit "Ignore Food" under orders while I was dicking around with them, ffff.
