Get a hunter, butcher and cook on the go. Plump helmets with the occasional good meal will be fine.

Is falling damage affected by the surface something falls on? Because in my first droptower, goblins dropped on the first subject's corpse tend to survive/be mangled, unlike the first one that died instantly. Is that a coincidence, is my tower too small?

I just now realized something I should have done a long time ago. Normally when I make fortresses I rely on a strong military and lots of traps in the entrance, for some odd reason I still lose anywhere from 1 - 3 working dwarfs during attacks, I just now realized (since its getting time for some goblins to arrive) that I should protect my woodcutters and haulers from being caught in an ambush by assigning some trained military dwarfs for protection. My markdwarfs are still training up so they would not be a good candidate, instead I've recruited two worthless people to practice wrestling, hopefully reaching legendary shortly, then wherever I'm chopping trees I'll have these two heavily armored guards watching. Am I really late to doing this? Edit: My first dwarf, our best miner Gimili, is being watched while he sleeps by a Liaison...

You've never protected your woodcutters before? During my annual wood-chopping time when my entire fort is either hauling wood or chopping them down I have my entire military on watch.
