Dwarf Fortress - Mom, why are those Elves eating each other?

How do you stop dwarves from leaving their bedroom doors open? It looks like there's no door there at all.

The irony is I have them set to "Keep tightly closed" and it still says they're open.

OH GOD A KITTEN IS RUNNING ABOUT THE FORTRESS WITH A ROTTING CORPSE SPREADING MIASMA EVERYWHERE

I survived the siege with almost no casualties! Only 99% of the fortress dead, the sole survivor Grand Master miner ripped out the spine of the last Orc.
This hero will be remembered by his comrad-- wait no one else survived
FFFFFFUUUUUUUU
Seven people died from starving from my GREAT FOOD DEPRESSION. I think I'm in the clear for now.
THINK.
Three of my wrestlers are carrying babies.
I'm sure it's just coincidence.
military romance :3
Created my own mist generator (If you don't know, mist is generated when water falls down a Z-Level, Dwarves get happy thoughts from it).
I couldn't work out how to make one, I have no idea how to use waterwheels, windmills etc to power a screw pump, so it was easy to make the waterfall bit, but draining the pool was impossible.
Worked it out today though, embarked on a site with rivers on different Z-levels, the top river falls down, and drains into the lower river. Woo.

It works perfectly, although I made a mistake in the way the water falls which causes a lil spillage on the left side.
My story:
*Download, Start, Confusingly find a place to start my fortress.*
*Look at main game interface*
*MAJOR BRAIN DAMAGE*
*Delete the game*
If you have an imagination this game is incredible fun. When I read Boatmurdered I saw the whole thing in my head.
ProgramFiles, you fail. I bet you hardly read anything beforehand. There are some awesome tutorials out there, I dunno the links though..
If someone kind enough could post the link with the picture walkthrough, it'd help newbies.

Video tutorials on how to play
There was a written walkthrough with pictures. The guy posted the save and mike maydays tileset so you could follow along. Had it bookmarked, but I must have deleted it...

I still need people to test out my Land Carps.
Well i lost my fort because some gay error that cannot be fixed(it happend before)so im :crying::bang:
My god, what have I done...
I was possessed, I swear to it! I, nor any sane person, would ever even attempt to make something so horrifying, so terrible. I am so sorry for what I unleashed onto the world...
I never meant to make Land Carp
DmGod, if you're editing memory, it fucks up saves. Don't cheat, or use stuff like Reveal or whatever. Saves get corrupted.
I used to always do that, and the furthest i'd get in a Fort is to about year 2, then i'd close it, or restart the laptop, and the save would be messed up.
I never really had fun with this
it would take forever to prepare for the game and then when I actually got there I started digging then got bored when I started my farm

Yeah, I'd say that it is sort of an issue how long it can take until the sieges start, which is when shit gets interesting.
It's an alpha game though, sieges and staying alive are the only things you can do at the moment, i've heard in the broad scheme of things the creator would like to make it possible to take your squad all over the world, invade other forts etc.
So, a boatmurdered equivalent bloodline game for Facepunch.
If you guys are up for this we can gather and get it started.
I'd be up for it. I'd do year 3 or 4 though.
Also, guys, how is this game NOT fun? How is designing your OWN FORT not fun?! I love building my defense perimeter and channeling out my dry moat and starting work on my 7 z level high towers that overlook my main entrance :D

I'd love that if I understood something of what was going on
The only defense I have for my fort as of now is a system that drops crap about 10 z-levels. It's basically a giant hole in the entrance hallway with a "floating" island in the middle with 2 bridges connected to the island. Pressure plates on the island cause the bridges to collapse when any enemy steps on it. Because of the delay, enemies are halfway across a bridge before the bridge collapses and they plummet to their doom. A system of secure stairs let me retrieve the loot.
Problems arise when things sneak in, then get chased out by my dogs/dwarves. They hit the pressure plates, and everyone involved gets dropped.
So far 5 dogs and 2 dwarves have died, and my 2 best miners have been knocked out for at least a year after a cave-in while digging the pit under the bridges.
:D
I think I will have to start a game WITHOUT Dig deeper...because the orcs in did deeper keep comming way too early to even try to defend against and rape me X_X
I just had a sad experience, made me tear up.
My fisher dwarf was all happy, just standing there fishing like he normally would. He didn't even notice the giant sand scorpion behind him. He got ripped apart. My woodcutter and farmer went to check it out and it ripped off the farmers legs. The woodcutter managed to kill it with his axe but got a large chunk ripped out of him.
He died later on his bed in his sleep. Even worse was that he was in love with the one girl miner.

For a mist generator I just made a small room with a pump with two holes either side of it, and the two holes joined underneath the pump. I designated a hole as a pond and waited for it fill up, then I sealed off the room with a window and built a windmill directly over the top of the pump. Piece of piss.
It seems that either my DF fucked up or I forgot how can I put the goddamn animals in the cages. The wiki is cryptic as fuck on this precise issue, can anyone give me a hand?
God damn it, I can't find any bauxite for my magma flood gates.
