Mike Maydays tileset
No.
Argh, I just lost the biggest fortress that I've ever made. I'd forgotten that the moat I built was only completed by finishing the digging from inside my fortress, and I blocked it off with a floodgate. It lasted for ten years, until a Bronze Colossus came. My guard-dragon smashed it into the moat, and despite breaking off most of the colossus' body, it crawled over to the floodgate and bashed it open. My fortress was completely flooded, because the main section was built one Z-level below the moat. The water flooded in and filled my entire fortress, eventually, including the great magma forge and adamantium storage. 2 dwarves escaped. 158 dwarves drowned to death. 10 dwarves were trapped in the farming district, which was the only part of the fortress that wasn't flooded. None of them have pickaxes. 1 dwarf was eaten by carp during the flood. You know what? Fuck it, I'm going to build another fortress on the same god damn plot of land without even restarting.
Hah, fucking awesome. I really need to get back into Dwarf Fortress. Seriously, only things like this can happen in Dwarf Fortress.
No.
Would you kindly express your opinion in greater detail.
Use Isenhertz or Plac1d.
I've really taken my time to get into Dwarf Fortress because, frankly, other games don't work out for me. I have some questions, though. People mention fast forwarding the game.. How do you do this? Is it possible to find and tame animals/large beasts like colossi/dragons/titans/hydra? How?
What skills do the survivors have?
None, they're champion crossbowmen that stood guard with the dragon I kept on a chain out front. P.S. I just realized I can't keep going because they can't work... Oh well... time to abandon.

Kennels? How do you form those? How do you train a dwarf to be a dungeon master noble? [editline]11:30PM[/editline] Is there a way to fast-forward the game at all?
Would you kindly express your opinion in greater detail.
If I did, I would get called a jackass again by 75% of the people who lurk this thread, but fuck 'em, this thread needs some life. Mike Mayday's tileset has to be the ugliest piece of shit tileset there is out there. The ground looks like shit, the objects look like shit, the creatures look like shit, everything looks like shit. It seems like Mike put no time into making his tilesets at all. God if I know why the tileset gained so much popularity. If you want to use a tileset, I would recommend using this one, or really any other one of this page: http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Tileset_repository#Dorten [editline]08:27PM[/editline]
Kennels? Like, what the fuck.
Kennels? How do you form those? How do you train a dwarf to be a dungeon master noble? [editline]11:30PM[/editline] Is there a way to fast-forward the game at all?
You press 'b' then 'k' to build kennels. The dungeon master will migrate to your fort when certain conditions are met. If my memory serves me well those conditions are finding of a feature (brook, river, magma, ect.) and having a population over 50. for some (common) pets the animal trainer skill and animal caretaker skills will suffice. As for time control, I only bothered learning how to stop it (pause) when i needed to do something, otherwise I let the game run in the background. Edit:
God if I know why the tileset gained so much popularity.
I attribute it to the fact that it is installed into the game then distributed allowing for easier installation.
I kinda wish I hadn't learned Dwarf Fortress on a tileset, it's really hard to distinguish some things from others compared to vanilla Dwarf Fortress. [editline]02:07AM[/editline] What do I do with the animals we brought on our caravan? I have a dining room full of camels and puppies and shit. (Don't worry about the garbage, I have a refuse pile, but something someone was gonna eat decayed.) Also, do I need to feed them to keep them alive?
Here's the living quarters of my next biggest fortress. This one has no possible weakness, though, there's a retractable bridge over a 15 z level pit with lava at the bottom which is the only entrance. There are lots of elf caravan skeletons down there. It's only been breached two times, both by kobold thieves. The first time, he was captured by a cage trap, and my guards executed him in my pit of death that goes down to the bottom of the map. The walls are engraved all the way down with a nice marble floor at the bottom, which is always covered nicely in blood. The other time, the kobold was smashed into 9 different pieces by our pet hydra after he broke into his holding pen.
Holy shit, that looks fucking awesome. You must be some kind of DF expert.
There are a lot of "DF experts" in this thread, as a many of us have been playing it for years. I consider my own "expertise" to be building large above-ground fortresses/castles.
Holy shit, that looks fucking awesome. You must be some kind of DF expert.
The longer you play for, the better you get. Just keep playing.

What's going on I see names I remember in this thread now, is it time to start playing again?
Unfortunately not yet, but we're getting close :( [editline]09:32PM[/editline] Also, me hates the month-end project. It's crap not to see dev log entries every second day or so.
Fuck it. I'm gonna start a new fort.
Aggargragrargahrgahrgrag. I need the update now! (or modern warfare 2/lost planet 2/diablo 3/ something else)
Ok, How do I keep these fuckers happy? I always build fast and expand to giving them bedrooms but the always are fucking sad and run away, then get posessed, and then from there I abandon and start over because I seem to suck really bad. and I have on luck finding lava even when I am on the search thing and search for lava pool or tube, pisses me off. And I can never hold a food supply because even though I have enough seeds and shit, they always some how run out even with my farmer who plants all the time, or he doesnt plant at all and they starve. wtf?
A good (high value) dining hall will go a long way towards a happy fort (Has dined in a legendary dining room recently). Other sources of happiness are water falls (tricky/dangerous), statue gardens, zoos (built filled cages), high quality food and drink. You should also reduce sources of unhappiness: death, miasma, vermin, starvation. As for the food shortage, ensure that the farm has been set to grow things, plump helmets work best as they can be eaten raw. And do not cook plump helmets as this will destroy the seeds. you can theoretically improve the amount of food in the fort by brewing the plants then cooking the booze produce for a five fold increase. In practice, the dwarves just drink the booze before it can be cooked. Another short term solution is to kill the pets for food, the butcher will provide the meat but the fat will need rending into tallow then cooking. You can hunt the wildlife near the fort for for some extra meat and tallow. You can also make food and drink your primary import for the first few years. You can also forage for plants, then cook the seeds of plants that you will never grow (surface plants).
There's plenty of ways to make your dwarves more happy. A high-level carpenter not only works more quickly but makes higher quality, more finely crafted items, same for pretty much any skill. Dwarves get a happy thought from admiring high-quality furniture. To see what a dwarf's thoughts are, select him from the V camera, then do [p] [z] [enter]. This'll show any thoughts he's had recently. If you want to keep your growers focussed on growing, turn off the non-skill tasks like hauling, cleaning and healthcare. That way, they won't go to carry around items to stockpiles.

Make sure you have plenty of booze, and make a huge dining hall, then smooth and engrave it. That should keep them very happy. For finding lava, go to your init file (Dwarf Fortress\data\init\init.txt.) and set the section that lists the visible features (e.g.: SHOW_EMBARK_RIVER:NO) and change them all to ALWAYS. Now you can see the features without searching.

It this mike's?
Yeah, it is.
