Dwarf Fortress - Mom, why are those Elves eating each other?
2,002 replies, posted
Just started playing again. I'm making a big fort with an outdoor plaza.
Well, after being cut off from the outside world for about a year, the above fortress I posted finally ran out of crossbow bolts. Time to sally out with all my dwarves conscripted to a single squad and fight the enormous horde of goblins waiting outside. Due to some modding, and terrible luck, their leader is a Titan with an adamantine great axe and breastplate.
Luckily the leader of my army is pretty much as skilled as one can possibly get, and has a full suit of adamantine armor. This guy is also the one who killed all the tentacle demons by himself. This is going to be fun... heh. That or horribly depressing. My other main champion lost his hands and one of his legs. I'll put him out of his misery with the good ol' lava filled bedroom soon enough. None of the previous inhabitants were suspicious of the bauxite furniture.
I've been busy plugging away at underground stuff. Specifically (and this was behind a spoiler before if you want to skip to the next paragraph), I'm finishing off the new unique generated beasts before I move on to the other parts. I thought the giant hairy ribbon worm with stretched skin wings was pretty scary, and the eyeless antennae lizard was sort of quirky, but the great blob of living vomit with a round shell could use some work. Yay devlog update <3
I feel like my new fortress is going to go well. 2 Strange moods in the first year, resulting in:
Legendary Armorer
Legendary Mason
:D

Damn, was going to post that. New random monsters look awesome.

the great blob of living vomit with a round shell, hahahahaha
Argh, I just lost the biggest fortress that I've ever made. I'd forgotten that the moat I built was only completed by finishing the digging from inside my fortress, and I blocked it off with a floodgate. It lasted for ten years, until a Bronze Colossus came. My guard-dragon smashed it into the moat, and despite breaking off most of the colossus' body, it crawled over to the floodgate and bashed it open.
My fortress was completely flooded, because the main section was built one Z-level below the moat. The water flooded in and filled my entire fortress, eventually, including the great magma forge and adamantium storage.
2 dwarves escaped.
158 dwarves drowned to death.
10 dwarves were trapped in the farming district, which was the only part of the fortress that wasn't flooded. None of them have pickaxes.
1 dwarf was eaten by carp during the flood.
You know what? Fuck it, I'm going to build another fortress on the same god damn plot of land without even restarting.
hahahahahah
hahahahahah
Yeah, I can imagine a hole in the wall with water and carps flowing in from it.
Kinda reminds me of the movie I saw once, with people trapped in an undersea building/laboratory of some kind, which started flooding and intelligent sharks came in from the holes.
So I was wondering how do I get them 3D-ish textures instead of the ASCII style?
The main export of my fortress is either clothes or pain
But pain is ussualy for the goblins and elfs.
I take their clothes then. And earn up a nice amount of money.

Question, why am i getting so many goblins ambushes after their siege? i mean, i got the second one right now.
And they are damned axemen. Time for my traps to work their magick
I just downloaded this, and wow, this is hard, and confusing. Those symbols are gonna give me nightmares for weeks. Is these anything to turn the symbols into something simpler?

It simplified the hell out of it for me.
Its still hard to get around though, especially the trees.

Dangit, my legendary marksdwarf has died
And he had so much fun shooting goblins from the tower.
Guess it was his fault for trying to get some water during the goblin ambush.

No. Fucking man up and take an hour out of your day to learn the interface. It's not that tough.

I also can't wait for the boxes and crosses

Wasting an hour of your life to learn a text based game isn't too great.
I give up. Game's far too confusing. >:
I shall re-watch the tutorial videos all over again.

I learned it with a tileset but recently decided to go without and realised that I can now handle it easily.
Best of both worlds. :v:

It's all personal preference, it has nothing to do with "manliness". Grow up.

I'm quite pleased so far, it's my first fort I've made in quite a while.
If anyone is interested you can download my pack which includes this tileset and linux binary for 40d16 here.

It has everything to do with manliness.
You can't call yourself a real man until you can name what every character in DF represents.
I built self sustaining fortress while only using wiki on default tileset on first try. (well, it was 3rd try, but the first two I didn't even dig anything)
:smug:
Now enough masochism, I am getting some of these picture ones.

Just learn it if you have started already, it'll be worth it if you get into modding or install mods anyway, since they don't usually have tilesets.

Is there any way to get native Linux 64 binary?

So you say I should stay at default tileset if I already got into it?
The thing which pisses me off the most is how tiny the original tileset is. I need some 1680x1050, or as close as possible.

I actually took the time to give my fortress a name. :v:
A goblin siege isn't so great against one legendary hammer man with full steel body armour.

IMPORTANT
Wanna know how to get those elven goods that come with the punny elven traders?
Well its simple, build a wall around them, let them go beserk (from starvation or thirst, wichever comes first) and let them kill each other.
Then grab all of their goods.
Ive did this with one of the elven caravan, and now, they have come to trade yet again.
Time to start building that wall...

It is easy to increase the resolution, look in the wiki for instructions. Also try to find some square ASCII graphics pack, the normal one is a bit stretched.

Change the grid size in the init file, if your using a 16x16 tileset a value of 105:64 should do.
