When I order something to be slaughtered, how do I make the dwarves automatically butcher it so the corpse just doesn't sit there and rot?
You have to build a butchery, then order it to butcher a dead animal.
ninja'd
Ah all right then, how often do new dwarves appear?

Every season, depending on your forts living quality.
Or if you are me, never.
Hmm... one more thing, how do I clean up a floor area? Like I want to make a stockpile but the floor I dug out is littered with stones and stuff so I can't place one.

You can make that stone in to a beutiful floor if you have a mason.
But it also depends what kind of stone is that
It's a combination of red sand, bauxite and some graphite in the back room
Set a Garbage dump with the [i] menu, and set the stone to be dumped there. Don't forget to reclaim it if you want to use it later.

Hmm... you can't make a floor out of bauxite.
So then you need to explore the stone and dump it.
In short: k>d on every stone.
It's anoyng but it gets the job done.
Also, don't forget to put a refuse stockpile outside.
They don't seem to be moving anything
Edit: nevermind
don't k>d,
use d>b
don't k>d,

Wow! That's awesome! Thanks for all the help guys.
SAVE BAUXITE!
you can use it to make magma traps because it is the only safe stone for mechanisms.
I have the dump nearby so I can grab it later, if barrels are available will dwarves automatically fill them?

You can't fill barrels with stones.
If i'm not mystaken, you can fill them in bins though.
All right one more thing, is it possible to make an indoor area outdoor so it can be used for farming?
Channel the roof above it away so it's exposed to the sun.
I'd suggest doing the same if you want a statue garden or indoor refuse pile. The former so your dwarves don't get cave adapted and the latter so your dwarves don't have to go far into the dangerous outdoors to get rid of corpses.

Mine out the roof.

No, but you might even not want to. The basic and easiest farmable item ,"Plump Helmet", grows underground. You however need suitable floor for it even indoors, which is obtainable either by spewing water on stone (complicated), or by digging the hall into loam instead of stone (easy). Just dig just under grass, and you can put a farm plot there. Assign it to grow pump helmets, and you get infinite source of food. You don't even need to cook it. You can brew it... Ultimate noob crop.
How would one dispose of stone that's in the way of where you want to build something?
Dump it.
So I've started to get into this, and I haven't even touched fortress mode, yet.
I had a Legendary Wrestling dwarf with Expert Axedwarfsmanship that I was trying to build up. I started swimming up river to catch all the carp, lamprey, and what not with counter-strikes. I had a good herd going in front me, when all of the sudden:
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Sea Lamprey has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
Carp has been embedded in ice.
...
And so on for four notification pages. I was laughing hysterically until I realized... my dwarf was in the water, too.
I froze my whole fortress once.
good times good times.
Welp I didn't bring anvils with me and the only traders that are coming to me are other dwarves and I have no clue on how to get stuff from them... any way to get an anvil?
You may be able to buy one from the merchants. You will need some stuff to sell (lots of crafts) of approximately twice the value of the anvil (it is expensive). to preform the trade press [q] then select the trade depot (move courser over it). press [g] to open a stock window and select all of the crafts to be moved to the depot. Also press [r] to call your broker over to do the trade (you may need to remove all his other duties before he will come). Once all the goods have been moved to the depot (having the crafts in bins will allow more to be move at once) and the broker has finally arrived you may trade by selecting the depot with [q] then pressing [t] to open the trade window. you will have 2 coloums the left is the mercht's goods and the right is your goods (at the depot), below the merchents list is his profit/loss gauge (broker must be novice or better in the appraiser skill see it.). You will need to select the items you want to sell and buy by selecting them with the arrow keys then pressing enter, once you have selected the item press [t] to trade. If the trader does not make a profit or the profit is too small he will reject your trade but may make an offer by asking for more items in addition to what was asked (increasing his profits). As all you want is 1 anvil (cost about 1000*) you will to sell over 100 crafts to buy it (valued at about 8-15*). All price estimates are assuming the the items are at minimum quality.
If the merchants do not have an anvil you can request one from the liaison who will see to it that there is one in the next caravan (at increased price).
I didn't bring an anvil with me.
Just flood the Depot and take it.

Or build a wall around it.
Since killing them will create a siege
While if they withdraw from their society and go beserk, they will no longer be apart of the massive empire they came from.
And thus the empire will no longer be responsible for their deaths.
Dwarves can't go to war against other dwarves.
I built a trade depot with a lava intake/drainage system, all with magma-safe materials. It's useful to filter out everything but the useful metal goods like weapons and armor. I mean, I could have used the time it took to build that system to craft trade goods, but I prefer having as many lava-deaths in my region as possible. It makes the unit list prettier.
