I'm currently applying to join the RAF and I don't know how long the process takes before I'm fully joined.
God help me if it's anywhere near the release of GW2 I'll flip shit.

If I am correct, your basic training takes place a while after your application. You also get to be on leave every once in awhile.
Engineer has multiple ways to confront an enemy, the name of the game is preparation. If you are fighting a melee, keep at range with net/glue shot and simply gun them down. Blowtorch and blunderbuss if they get in your face. Overcharged shot keeps the gap between you and your opponent far. Use it when they get into an unwanted close range fest and if net shot is still on CD. Grenades are to be used against multiple opponents, and flamethrower for a "furball" fight when it is a big mess with no clear line of battle.
Mesmer is straightforward in pve. Clones will keep the mobs off of you, so only sacrifice them when said mob is about to die for a finisher. In PvP use clones as a distraction if you get in trouble. Use a stealth ability and break LOS. They will be too busy killing your clones to find you, and if they do realize you are not in the fight anymore, you will be long gone.
Necromancer is used to fill everyone's screen with conditions, use this along with minions and your flexible weapon skills to mould your fighting ability and style as you see fit.
Learn what each elite skill does, and learn when is the proper time to use it.
For survivability, take note of the passive stat bonus each tree gives you, so for example, choose an offensive ability in a tree that gives health/durability for a neat mix, and vice versa.
I'm aware of how the classes work, I spent literally the entirety of every BWE testing and trying different builds, I'm more looking for advice on the builds of these three classes that are survivable while still being able to kill someone.
A common problem I ran into when I built too defensively is that I wouldn't ever die (save for a mesmer, even when I went full out defensive on these guys i'd go down more than the necro and engi combined) but i wouldn't be able to kill anybody either.

I just realized I read your entire question wrong, sorry. :v:

No worries, I appreciate the time you put into your answer in the first place.
Ele fire field combined with thief's elite call in thieves, good?

Application can take 4 - 6 weeks to be contacted back, I then have to have an interview and then after that basic training.
Hopefully in total that take around 2 months and I can play Guild Wars 2 for a good month.
Hey all, I was hoping to get a bit of help, i'm having a bit of an identity crisis.
I want to start this off by saying I like very survivable builds, and I found myself doing this on every class I tried. My three favorites were the Engineer, Mesmer, and Necromancer. I've decided it's between these three that i'll roll on the 25th. I played all three extensively during every BWE. Engineers did quite well with survivable builds, and they were quite fun (especially with grenades) but the underwater combat for them is a real mess and the fact they have no "corrupt boons" type skill (even though throw elixir c SHOULD be that, it'd fit perfectly...) really bothers me as those skills are wayyy underrated and I when I used them on the Mesmer (Arcane Thievery is really really good, try it instead of Null Field) and Necro they always lead to a kill. However, I don't really like the look of medium armor from what i've seen in endgame and that also bothers me. With the mesmer, they're very cool and unique but even with a survivable build they're a bit squishy for my tastes. Everything else was awesome, they have the best teammate revival skill in the game by miles. Necromancer definitely satisfied my survivability hunger, they had all that and more, I could live against 2+ (short term 3+) people for as long as I wanted and I could be a point defender king. However, I did almost zero damage and was basically boon/condition control duty 24/7.
Do you guys have any insight or advice? I'd love to hear your opinons about these three classes and their survivability builds that can still dish out some damage.
Also, secondary question, what was the most annoying build you fought in BWE3? Besides spirit weapon guardians, they were bugged and don't count.
Condition builds were doing well in BWE3. The best was engineer which did a mix of bleeding and fire damage about 50/50 of each. And an axe build ranger who did a lot of bleed damage.
Survival builds were pretty bad in pvp though Most people rolled mixed builds or glass cannons.
They were a pain because condition damage goes through invulnerability like mist form or endure pain.
How did the tournament teams work on the last BWE? Was it like RBGs in WoW where you had to organize a team first and then go, or were you able to just queue up and get in with a random team? I'd like to be able to queue up with random people just for the hell of it instead of being forced to try to organize a team every time. Of course i'll have a dedicated tournament team but RBGs in WoW can sometime take hours to organize and it's such a pain

Im not really sure i think you can just join and it will throw you in with randoms but the servers were down so much i didnt get to try it. I think it will be much easier than WoW you don't have to worry about gear as much or finding tanks and healers and the fact its a team of 5 will help too.

For ranked tournaments you need a team of 5 people & 5 tournament tickets to sign your team up (which are easily obtainable in sPvP)
The other tournament type, the free one, not too sure what that's about, haven't tried it. Probably the same but unranked and free. :D
How do tournaments work? I don't know anything about them. Don't they require those tickets that you can purchase in the gem store (excluding the apparent free tournament)?
I only got to play for like 3 hours the last BWE but I got like 3 tickets from doing SPvP matches and getting chests or something. I was hoping to do a tournament but never got around to it. All i know is that if you win a tournament you get some badass looking gear which you can mix and match if you win several tournies
Wait there are chests in sPvP?
They award PvP-only gear.
Wait there are chests in sPvP?
I believe you get them for ranking up your glory and also get them randomly when you win in SPvP matches. I could be wrong
How do tournaments work? I don't know anything about them. Don't they require those tickets that you can purchase in the gem store (excluding the apparent free tournament)?
8 teams of 5 in sudden death type elimination winner gets a chest of loot runners up get lesser chests i think. Free tournaments require no tickets. I think i managed to get 12 or so of those thickets they weren't very common i opened 18 glory ranks worth of chests which is probably 40ish chests.
This also allowed me to test out the mystic forge, and i can tell you its shit, you are better off just saving the items for alts. Also don't bother buying glory chests till higher glory rank because the gear looks almost the same as starter pvp armour.
I think they buffed glory you get this BWE i was getting 300-400 glory a match most times.
Tournament people in the first hour got better looking gear than i did doing 20+ hours of Spvp which was kind of annoying seeming i didn't have a team to do tournaments with.
You only get chests when you go up a glory rank or buy them with glory points at the vendors. Bronze 250 silver 500 gold 1000. Bronze seemed to drop weapons and armour far more often gold would give me a better chance at items like glory boosters and special finisher consumables that would last 30 mins i think. i think silver chests often gave 4 slot bags and gold 8 slot bags.
From the chests i got: armour, weapons, glory booster 50% 1 hour, custom finishers, random dyes, bags, tournament tickets.

This makes sense though. Tournaments are usually for higher skill level people with an organized team. Winning a tournament is a lot harder than grinding sPvP for a long time. You can play 100 hours of sPvP in random matches and still be awful at the game, you see it all the time in other games. Not implying that you are bad at the game.
i guess so , i would like to see maybe a bonus reward for winning a certain amount of matches in a row because i literally won 80% of my matches. Or better stuff from the glory rank chests because they gave the same loot as one bought through glory. The last few hours of Spvp were much more competitive but they all had really cool looking gear where i looked like a noob in regular chain mail.
Im really looking forward to release Spvp now that i know how to join my friend if he is on the opposition, to join someone you have to open the scoreboard in the game by pressing (B) and clicking on the arrow, it wont switch you if it makes the team 2 player difference like 5v7.
Did anyone else have this problem? for all 3 beta's i didn't even know how to open the scoreboard till i tried to check WvW status while in a pvp match by random chance so they definitely need to make things clearer for people new too MMO's.

I heartily disagree, when I went for defensive builds I also went for condition damage. It was pretty coincidental I liked classes with plenty of powerful conditions available, such as Poison, Chill, Weakness, and Bleeding. I was usually able to outlast my enemies, it's just how I enjoyed fighting. I did quite well in tournaments too, got over 15 tournament tickets each on my Engineer and Necromancer.
In a tournament setting being on condition duty was pretty rewarding as a tankier build, as an Engineer i could stack conditions much faster than anyone could condition cleanse with the Pistol, Grenade kit, and Bomb kit. As a Necro I had Corrupt Boons and Plague Signet on top of being able to quickly put out conditions with scepter/dagger/staff.
Mesmer is kind of a different ballgame, that's kind of what keeps attracting me to it.

Also, just wanted to add, nothing beats the feeling of using Corrupt Boons on a Guardian who just used Contemplation of Purity on a whole bunch of conditions.

This also bugged me a bit. It's really not shit, there are recipes for things. Meaning if you put in the same four crafting items, the same thing will come out every time. Once I realized this, I was able to craft the Flame-Legion PvP armor (The most highest ranking pvp armor available for BWE3) for all of my characters after some trial and error.
It's really just a matter of time before people start posting the recipes for things and you'll be able to craft the exact pvp armor you like. If you had taken time to experiment with it, you would have known it's really not shit at all.
Holy shit large patch!

Making a Elementalist build is hard, in my opinion.

If guildwars.com's contest section is to be believed, her name is Freyja Fimbulvetr (which is highly appropriate for a norn by the way), two year running (2010/2011) grandprize winner in their costume contest from Norway.

Looking at her Deviantart account name, Adamoluna and her About Me stating that her name is Katerina M. Then looking at her Photobucket with the same account name and a picture of her Guild Wars 1 character with the name of Freyja Fimbulvetr makes me believe that is her IGN.
Also after translating this Norwegian article about her contest. They call her Tzu but if you click on her name it will give you a link to her dA profile, Adamoluna!
Then considering that on the Guild Wars 1 Contest page, they state that she is from Norway.
