Besides, it doesn't unbalance, your level is 80 anyway when you go pvp, so it's only for pve, and it seems a good way to get an alt to lv 80 quick.
Almost 10€ for character slot?? not looking good, I'd rather buy another account for less €/character.
400 gems = 4.80€
Use that as a benchmark however you see fit.

How much is that in $$$?
Probably like 6.5-7 dollars.
Edit: I stand corrected, 6.3 dollars according to google.
How much is that in $$$?
6.5 dollars.
4.80 euros = 6.3163 US dollars
So...$1.50 for 100 gems?
$30 for 2000 gems?
Then the Character slot would be around $12!
[editline]22nd March 2012[/editline]
wtf... $36 for three extra character slots.
1 Character slot though. Didn't we get 2 in gw1 for roughly the same price? And i bet you get a discount if you get alot.
Q: Do we get gems to start with if we get collectors edition? (Because for the 80 extra euro's, i want more than 1 skill, items that give small bonuses that you could obtain by playing anyway and are one time use anyway. The only plus, really, is the statue.
Wonder if they will have discounts for bulk purchases or a discount when you buy 2000 gems (assuming that's a bulk amount).

I'll reckon they will.
some questions:
so will they really let us buy gems for gold?
are gems are overpriced in gold?
is combat something like Tera(rolling, dodging, if a sword swings at five enemies it will hit five enemies)?
is there those hobbies or whatever you call them - mining, fishing, cooking? (i know there's crafting)
I have this terrible feeling that it's ≃ $6.30 for europeans, but for people in the US it's going to be $5.
@Eternal
Character slots in GW1 were $10, so it probably wont be any different.

1. yes, but the player has to initiate the trade so they will know that they are sacrificing gold for cosmetic items
2. don't know yet
3. Combat is similar to Tera as you can dodge, shoot randomly (doesn't require targets), and you can hit multiple enemies depending on your weapon and skills used.
4. We don't know yet, but there are festivities in towns and cities as well as mining, gathering, cooking, etc

Anybody can mine/gather plants/etc. I don't think there are any restrictions on doing any one of those.
No idea about fishing, but there is cooking. Cooking is a crafting skill.

Alright! Thanks for the info. Too bad there's not too much info about gems since that's the thing i'm most concerned about.
Saw overpriced character slots coming the second it was revealed there were only 5 slots default.
Just be honest and price the game at $80 so I can play one of every class

I can't believe how far this thread has come since the first, small thread we had.
The only thing that is irksome to me are the megaphones. The keys don't bother me, because Anet has already told us that in activities like dungeons, we a guaranteed a gear drop from the bosses/end chest.
However, I can see why the megaphones are being implemented. We now have an auction house to do our trading, and that therefor eliminates the need for the Trade chat that existed in GW1. Megaphones are a money sink for less intelligent people, who want to be heard all the time, and if I can mute global chat/megaphones, brilliant.
megaphones could be pretty cool hopfully there will be a toggle for it. or it will be in the chat box and not the middle of your screen cant wait to see someone save up a load of gems and dump them all into megaphones. people who quit probably will do that
so i wonder what the minis are gonna be used for, when i asked the developer months ago he said
"We loved how enthusiastic the players were about them in GW1 and would love to give them more uses in GW2."
seeing them being sold makes me wonder if we'll see pokemon stlye fights with them
They may be good for announcing events players planed or some cool game event going on.

You mean megaphones? I bet they will mostly used to sell stuff.

Pay money to sell something.
Brilliant.
Ok so you can get gems by trading so you don't actually need to spend cash?
Yes. Although whether or not they only come from other player buying them for real cash I dont know.
Pay money to sell something.

You can get megaphones for gold too. What if you had a really valuable item that hardly gets sold? Would you either:
A. Spam in normal chat alot, with almost no hope on selling the item.
B. Spend gold to broadcast, with way higher chances on selling, and earning the gold back anyway.
Say you are selling something that is worth 200gold and broadcast is 4 gold. Would you do it?
Ok so you can get gems by trading so you don't actually need to spend cash?
Yes, and you get to trade them, not via another player. (I think, looking at the screenshots above)
Woo! You can interchange gold for gems (gems you buy with real money), and gems for gold!
Meaning without paying an extra cent, you can get the items and stuff that other players who buy gems, get too. Except without paying it's slower.
Nice, I've seen this system at work in EVE and it really put a dent in RMT (real money trading).
For those who don't know, you buy "PLEXes" in EVE (Pilot License EXtensions) for real money. You can then sell them on the market in-game for isk (in-game currency) and people buy them. Once you use one, you get 30 days of additional time on your account. It's not a true comparison to gems for gold, but it's pretty close, and it stands as a working example of the system.
Experience boosts, and item drop boosts. Yeah, nah. Fuck that. I have zero problems with cosmetics. If someone wants to look different, that's their choice. Boosts are another matter entirely.
For what it's worth I am against mandatory grind in nearly every form. The barriers to entry into content should be almost exclusively tied to skill. However in my experience, paid items to reduce grind serve only as justifications for adding more of something that shouldn't exist to begin with. This is walking along a very thin line, and the only reason I don't view this as utterly unacceptable at this point is that I do not know the details yet. It may very well be that for high end players it is worth their time to sink in game currency into gems to get these boosts.
The whole don't like it, don't use it adage does not apply here. It's an in game advantage being conferred to people who pay more. It doesn't matter that you can buy the gems with ingame gold. Congratulations, you are grinding to reduce grind now. Even if the high end players can utilize loot boosts without consequence because the gains outweigh the costs, that does not mean that the casual players can.
There are so many ways this can be handled badly I could write pages about it. Time will tell, but I am extremely pessimistic about this. Quite honestly, given how often I've seen this sort of system turn into a complete and total catastrafuck, I feel that that pessimism is entirely justified.

Experience boost isn't an advantage.
Item drop boost could be considered an advantage, though you already have max armor at max level anyway, it only gives extra chances for other skins, I suppose.
All in all, it doesn't give advantages.
