Well, Ubisoft revealed the official name of this promising downloadable title at GamesCom this past week; it'll be called From Dust, and it's coming to the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Steam some time in March.
Where they got March from, I don't know.

Few websites are reporting March, so the source is somewhere unless they're syndicating from each other.
What you need to know:
* Big things often come in small packages, and this couldn't be more true for development studios with a small staff as opposed to studios with hundreds of people--just look to groups such as PlayDead, who created critical darling Limbo, and Q-Games, the minds behind the PixelJunk series. From Dust is being created by a small staff as well, and puts players in control of manipulating the game world by harnessing its elements; for example, sucking up a portion of the ocean water and placing it on land will create a small lake, or grabbing land from a lush forest and placing it on dry land will cause the wildlife to flourish. On the more destructive side, taking a heaping river of molten lava from a volcano and placing it on land will set the surroundings ablaze.
* There's more to do in From Dust than simply alter the landscape, though. Primitive tribes call on you for protection from the elements, and to help them expand their civilization. To protect them, you must lead members to certain elemental stones, which protect them from utter destruction. A meter at the bottom of the screen counts down to a natural disaster, which turned out to be a giant tsunami in our demo.
* In the demonstration, the Ubisoft rep created a land bridge across the water from the tribe's island by unleashing a deluge of sand into the ocean. The game creates an automatic path for tribesmen to follow to find the elemental stones, and upon returning with the stone that protects them from water elements, the tribe began doing a chant accompanied by dancing and music. Without warning, a giant wave appeared on the horizon, on a quick path towards our tribe's island. Because we granted them protection by leading them to the elemental stone, the giant wave crashed all around the island, but left the people and the island itself untouched.
* Though we didn't see it in the demo, players will be able to recruit other tribes, whose surival they'll be liable for. Additionally, any tribes that cross paths will exchange elemental powers. Tribes that grow large can migrate to other areas as well, sending off a few members to start new families.
Point in development cycle: The game isn't due out until March of 2011, so the developers still have plenty of time to iron out the mechanics of the game.
My take: From Dust is very beautiful in a simple way, and its unique approach to gameplay is unlike any other game out there right now. I try as often as I can to champion inventive ways of approaching game development, and I have very high hopes for From Dust. Definitely keep an eye out on this one.

1) It could be a port (to PC)
2) Consoles have stronger than average CPUs. PS3 has 6 cores
PS3 has impressive specs apart from the GPU (it's shit, but Sony meant everything to be done on Cell anyway, the GPU is mainly for cache stuff) and the low RAM.
The 360 has three cores, sure, but it's nothing impressive considering it's based on ancient CPU architecture.
Nor do I EXPECT space age and tanks and all, but it would be very wise for the developers to up the modding potential to the highest level. The engine they've just created, from what I can see, is by far the most optimised game engine (that has water physics) yet.
A godly game engine like this simple CANNOT go without modding, unless Ubisoft decides to pull off the "but tey pirat our gaem!11!" argument against modding again.
They are not real water physics, it's grid based. They just made it look fancy.
PS3 has 6 cores
No it doesn't
I... I think I just jizzed my pants. This game looks fucking awesome and I seriously hope they don't pull a Spore. Because there will be blood. There will be fucking blood.

Actually the only thing that is good is the Cell, the rest is meh.

This too.
How can you even pull a spore? Will they remove the people and replace them with googly eyed ball monsters?
How can you even pull a spore? Will they remove the people and replace them with googly eyed ball monsters?
No, by completely removing everything awesome looking, such as procedurally generated movement and more realistic monsters in Spore. The equivalent would be all this amazing real time water displacement and sand distribution.
This is the first, and I hope only, game to make me ROCK HARD.

First off, it's being released simultaneously for PC and console, I doubt that it's going to be a port.
Secondly, consoles don't have stronger than average CPUs. The XBox 360 has a triple-core Xenon CPU made by IBM and the PS3 has an 8 core CPU with one of the cores working as a manager for the rest. Not to mention, the CPU in the PS3 is not easy to program for and a lot of games don't utilize the full potential of the PS3.
Average PC CPUs aren't just running a game and small guide program, they run an entire operating system.
I still wonder what kind of computers they're using to develop this game.
I haven't heard of this game until now. It looks very fun.

You mean the equivalent of having moving textures over gaps where "water" can flow, or the generation of hills hidden under particles? It's like pinching the ground and pulling it upwards or pushing it downwards- it just looks like a glorified map maker with little people who run around, and you save or push in a direction by way of telling them where to go. Saving them from disasters is apparently telling them to stand near a "Special rock" where they're saved. The mechanics could at least have a nice back story to them instead of being elemental stones. It feels so lazy.
OMG, i loved populous so much!
i can't wait for it..
Why did I read this? Now there's another game I badly want...
I'm gonna make a dick island.
then when it gets eroded I can shout "NOOOOOOO! MY DICK IS MELTING!"
One thing that I would like to do very much is to make a unique island with some weird rock formations that make it so. Like some sort of giant mushroom rock.
Also it would be cool to give the humans a glorified base or something just to give them good standing.
I have a feeling I will just make a paradise for my people, then call in tsunami's and volcanoes.

"hurr durr i cant enjoy good games so i just bash everything about it that doesnt fit my god complex standards"
As long as it looks good and plays good it is good.

Demo impressions.
Hurry up and come out damn you.
On Steam? WOO! I thought it was just being released as an XBLA title. This is news to me!
Awesome. I fucking love Populous 3 so this is right up my alley.
I'm so fucking waiting for this. It looks awesome.
Tech demo in the OP is amazing. I loved Populous...so glad to see it continue, even in a "spiritual" way.
This seems interesting, Can't wait for it.
Who here is going to make a warlike tribe of pyromaniacal mass murderers on the same island as the resident pacifistic flowerchild tribe?
Populous is an awesome game, I remember playing the first and second one on the commodore64, and the third one on Windows 98.
I'm going to try and protect my tribe the old fashioned way. Hard, Stiff Rock.

This looks absolutely awesome.
I've noticed god games are actually working in a complementary way : the sims allows the player to directly inflate a life, spore makes you create a whole specie, black and white allows you to control a whole tribe, and finally, from dust allows you to indirectly control a tribe's fate through the modification of their own world. Basically, each game explores a specific side of the concept : controlling a life, a whole specie, a whole tribe or even the world they are evolving in. This is an awesome way to develop an idea, in my opinion.
About graphics. Good god these are wonderful. I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the water physics and the overhaul game appearance. I also like the tribe's design, it's quite original while still keeping the main ideas of tribal groups (masks, primal instruments and stuff).
The last thing I hope is that the game will really be turned toward the total sandbox concept. I don't want to be obligated to save a tribe from a tsunami because I know this will trigger a game over.
The only thing I am now really wondering is if the game will also allow the player to add specific life forms, for example, taking the essence of life from a specie, and place it in a specific element to create a new life form, i.e being able to manipulate life as you manipulate sand or water.
[editline]05:43PM[/editline]
Also, the game is made by French guys :smug:
This game is practically orgasmic. I looked it up yesterday. Too bad I have to wait about a year?
Anyways, yeah, Spore was a DEFINENTY let down. The Beta looked epic... then they dulled it down so CHILDREN could play it more happily. Thats one reason... I mean, really. You dance and lay an egg? Lol.
Haven't been any updates or news for a while now, I guess we're in the post-announcement void (AKA when they announce the game and release a lot of info, then for the next months they don't have anything to release).
