I can kind of agree with that, it's why I hosted my own. I got tired of "survival" servers giving everything out. On mine it's like:
Person1: I want to build a mansion! :D
Me: Cool. There's an axe in this chest over here, and there's some trees over there. Have fun!

Yeah that's what i don't do, give materials out or cheat them in, it ruins most part of SMP for me, the fun for me is fighting monsters while chopping down a tree and mining diamond, yes i chop down trees at diamond level.

I found naturally-occuring reeds at diamond level so I'm halfway able to believe you.
Also, I kinda lied, the only stuff I DO cheat in is stuff you otherwise can never get, like the Glowstone we used in the tree farm. :<
