Maybe for some sort of shop system (Think vending machine, it dispenses and falls down a narrow gap). That is about the only practical use I can think of.

Well, it depends on what you mine, imagine mining sand and having a furnace to smelt it into glass, each time you break a stone shovel, you just throw the 64 sand in, and dispense a new shovel. Not utterly useless.

I believe there's a small chance of finding a random portal back to the normal world. It's been a while though so I may be wrong.

I went to Hell and harvested lots of glowstone to make a pillar of light in the middle, then as I started building it up it started melting the ice. :saddowns:
There needs to be a Nether compass which points to the nearest portal.
