I feel that above helps if you're trying to make a good looking exterior, while underground helps if you're trying to make a good looking interior. If you're talking safety wise, then it doesn't matter really.

Odd. Usually when you open up a new world, you spawn on sand. Unless the sand got cut through with caves or overground lake.

Haven't seen a stream link in this thread for a while now. Streaming was hella fun back in the day. I shat my pants going through all the caves and hearing skeletons shooting arrows behind me. Or creepers.
Plus I had notch come into my stream once when I was playing the SMP alpha. The time when he had it only on his server and the password was leaked about 30 mins before.
