Smoothstone takes ages to get

With wood, you cant use the burning method to remove the water (which i did)

They seem to be quite rare, for other people that is. Try looking REALLY deep in an ocean. Or get a boat and go really far out then try. I seem to be quite lucky when it comes to squids.. A bit too lucky..
