They're not, I pressed f5 and looked underwater, because if you do that, you don't get the water overlay, so it looks like above ground.
There was no squids.

This is correct, the pyramid is in fact the 40x40, divided into rings, and each ring goes one block higher then the previous.
I used 6400 sand for this pyramid, and some extra for the entrance.

Collecting 6400 sand takes over 4 diamond shovels so I think the amount of sand that was used is quite impressive.

That's the amount of sandstone required to make just the base, and because he's done a ring of sandstone every level until he closed up the top, it is the same as just filling up the base.

I used 2 diamond shovels, 2 stone and the rest was dug by hand.
EDIT: no wait, I used another diamond shovel last night to collect some sand beforehand, so 3 diamond shovels and 2 stone, and the rest was dug by hand.
