I still only get like 30 fps on minecraft at the default resolution with a 4850. Its pretty annoying, its enough but everyone else seems to be getting several hundred.

As for the mob trap design, I recommend checking out some videos to see what others have done. Keep in mind that the ones which gain thousands of items/hour dont do so any more because of updates.

After doing a huge trap underground before I did the one above, I can definitely say it's better to do it above ground.
Remember mobs wont spawn with 25 spaces of you or your spawn location, and they wont spawn more than 80 spaces away. Make spawn areas 3 blocks high and make sure you tackle spiders or they will clog up your trap. Lava is the best killing method.

I've got an ATI Radeon 4650, and I get about 30-35 constantly. Minecraft isn't really a good benchmark for computer power because it's unoptimized and made in Java.
