Matchmaking kinda works with L4D though.
It's not a very competitive focused game design, it's entirely designed around co-op. Even with Versus mode.
Only 8 players MAX, and you can still choose to play on community servers/with friends easily, if any are any on. Server mods work too.
There are commands when you start a game to prefer/only play on a specific server when it searches for games.
I think it works really well with matchmaking.
Now a game like MW2, which has 32+ player counts, is very competitively PvP focused, etc. to not allow ANY servers (L4D still did Dedi servers it just used matchmaking primarily to join them), no mods, no community features etc...

you know, im actually reconsidering getting mw2 because of all the people that refuse to buy it. if so many people actually don't get it, then the playerbase will be much smaller than i would want for a cod game.

Other then the fact that you get a lot of tough guys and kids on the 360, the matchmaking for Cod4 wasn't that bad, that may be because of the large playerbase though.
But the PC has a larger amount of hardcore video gamers, so I understand how they'll be pissed by this. I wouldn't want to have a 12 year old ruining a clan match.

Multiplayer is what separates games that have high longevities from ones that die in a few months. If Cod4 didn't have multiplayer I'd doubt it would have sold as much as it did.
Doesn't anybody here realize this is yet again another gimmick to get the activision higher ups more money? The lack of dedicated servers and mods is going to force DLC down PC player's throats, and yes all the DLC for MW2 will cost money.

The only real reason why consoles have matchmaking is because it's supported by default by Microsoft, and because it's a ALOT less aggrivating to find a good server to play on when you only have a controller.
With a keyboard+mouse, finding a server is easy through the use of filters/smaller type to allow more to be shown, etc.
I mean I don't want to say it's "hard" to do it on a controller, but it sure as hell is a lot less intuitive.
So when they force matchmaking on a game series that does fine without and works well without it on PC, it's not because "we have to be like consoles", it's because it simply[I] doesn't work as well for 90% of the audience.[/I]
