• Why are animations so overlooked?
Man Call of duty 4 had such good reload animations:
By extension, all COD's have good reload animations.
The CS:GO animations you posted are from December 1st, 2011.
Is this better? Most of the animations remain the same. The knife animation is also still hideous.
This is true. However, look at an ingame video of Internetianer's animations: I think this is far better than any of the CS:GO animations (even though it's a tad jerky on the reload). If someone who animates as a hobby can create animations better than someone being paid to make them for retail game then something is very, very wrong.
Doesn't look that much better. About the same really.
That is true, nothing to say they can't practice at home though ;)
I think he is referring to deadlines giving professional animators less time perfect/finesse a specific animation for a game, not overall animation skill. When you can work on a single animation of a gun for a couple of days/weeks you can do a lot more to make it look fluid and such, than someone who is expected to meet deadlines for multiple animations in a single week.
Here is another masterpiece of video game animation: I don't understand why more games can't strive for this quality of animation. [sp]I'm not actually criticizing these animations. I'm joking.[/sp]
Is it weird that I sort of like the CS:GO animations?

Now you're bitching about animations that look bad in a view mode that they were never supposed to be viewed at. Thats like bitching at 3d Pavement art because you're stood in the wrong spot.
Meanwhile I can't stand Borderlands' animations because they feel so sluggish.

Personally I have no clue what you guys want from CS:GO in the animation department, they look perfectly fine to me.
That "Example" with the pistol in your OP is a terrible example "Lol I'm gonna wave my fucking gun all over the screen, LOOK AT HOW SMOOTH IT MOVES HOLY SHIT"
While animations make a game somewhat better for me, I don't strictly evaluate them if the core game is good. The only time I really noticed the bad animations in Fallout 3 (although subconsciously) was with the Assault Rifle(s) and a few of the automatic weapons. *patpatpatpat*, while it swayed stupidly as you fire it (with nearly no recoil) and the reload animation was atrocious.
tripwire games have the best animation they did a great job on the ijc FAL too.

cs:go's weapon animations are fine, they have a proper sense of weight to them
That "Example" with the pistol in your OP is a terrible example "Lol I'm gonna wave my fucking gun all over the screen, LOOK AT HOW SMOOTH IT MOVES HOLY SHIT"
Yeah, for as "smooth" as it looks, it obscures the entire screen. I'd never want that in any sort of competitive game.

I pay attention to the animation in games all the time, it's just I won't allow it to be a huge factor in me enjoying the entire game. It's impressive to see if done well though, it's the reason I play play a few fighting games. Tekken is a good example of animation in fighting games, most of their martial arts are heavily stylized or exaggerated, yet they look realistic and doable.
tripwire games have the best animation
This completely, especially Killing Floor. The guns, animations, reloading and everything were perfect, not to mention they made you feel like a badass.
I don't see what's wrong with CS:GO's animations. They're certainly a huge improvement over CS:S and by proxy CS1.6's animations.
The source animating community on Gamebanana make 10x more quality animations than pretty much any and every professional game company does. [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline]
They're certainly a huge improvement over CS:S and by proxy CS1.6's animations.
Not really, CS's animations were just insanely outdated. They weren't bad, just old.
The source animating community on Gamebanana make 10x more quality animations than pretty much any and every professional game company does.
Define "quality" I only ever used custom skins in CS:S because it got to the point where the vanilla models were so low-poly it annoyed me. And even then most of the gun reload animations were too "badass operator reload style" and the recoil animation was always really weird. There are good examples, but I don't think the entire Gamebanana community outdoes professionals. And it really depends on which studios you're looking at.

Who reloads a pistol like that? And besides, there is nothing wrong with CS:GO's animations, since they're designed to be simple as to not distract you. Borderlands animations were bad, but honestly, the animations were not Borderlands biggest problem. And actually, I'm going to go here: if animations are that much of a dealbreaker for you in CS:GO you have bigger problems to look at than game animations
This completely, especially Killing Floor. [editline]22nd August 2012[/editline] OG cat: since l4d2 valve is letting interns do animations TRUFAX
Mirrors edge had amazing animation.
When you can spend a billion hours on a single animation because that's all you do in life
You obviously don't know anything about animators, because animations don't take long to make at all. A friend of mine made these, and he only started animating about a year ago. It doesn't take anymore than 2 hours to make a full set of animations when you sit down and just focus on it. Animating isn't hard, just hard to perfect. Gamebanana animations aren't perfect, but they're better then most of what you see in games these days.
Animating isn't hard, just hard to perfect. Gamebanana animations aren't perfect, but they're better then most of what you see in games these days.
you realize what a terrible logical fallacy this is? I don't have to explain it do I? and, not that your friend's animations are bad, they just don't have a place in Counter Strike
I don't see what's wrong with CS:GO's animations. They're certainly a huge improvement over CS:S and by proxy CS1.6's animations.
There's really nothing terrible about them. They look unnaturally stiff and unnaturally fast, but I guess that's expected of fast paced games.
