• Why are animations so overlooked?

sleeping dogs has some great animation
the only comparisons I ever drew were between CS:GO and CS:S which are y'know games in a series so they're directly comparable [editline]22nd August 2012[/editline] and this CS:GO is fun, I couldn't give a shit about the animations
Yep, it depends on the game really, for CS it doesn't matter as much as others, sure for a game thats expensive and tries to make its self believable and look good ok but for a $15 CS, nah. As long as they aren't clunky and look really bad that actually turn you off from the game it's fine.
let's not forget the funkiest animation of all time
sleeping dogs has some great animation
Sleeping dogs? Haaaa... Assassins Creed would like to have a word with you.
Sleeping dogs? Haaaa... Assassins Creed would like to have a word with you.
assassin's creed did have really fluid animations
Mirrors edge had amazing animation.
Mirrors Edge is less about the animations, more about the first person perspective bit. [editline]22nd August 2012[/editline]
assassin's creed did have really fluid animations
Assassin's Creed's animations are actually pretty good, now that I think about it.
now that's some good shit.
I really don't like how the muzzleflash looks, but the animation is pretty good.
Pretty, but impractical. Who reloads a gun like that? And why does it need to take up 2/3rds of the screen? So yeah, pretty, but distracting.
Just thought I should say this, but i made these for the purpose of being unrealistic/impractical. Plus this is one of my older animation sets. I think this could be a better example of a good animation set. Also, while i think that CS:GO's animations are pretty bad, they are definitely an improvement on the CS:S animations. They seem at least somewhat polished.
I'm too busy shooting shit or beating people to notice animations.
uh i dont want the reload animations in my game taking 10 seconds, i want to be able to play a fast paced fun game of CS:GO without having to deal with some flashy bullshit. look at the modern CoD games, they've got reloading nailed. it looks nice but it doesn't take 30 minutes to go through [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline]
Just thought I should say this, but i made these for the purpose of being unrealistic/impractical.
look at this, jesus what's with the long ass reload times
Are you daft? Skins are made to match the same amount of frames as default animations unless specified otherwise.

i mean it's visibly a long time, i dont really know how to explain it but it's just slow like if you look at borderlands reload times on those guns, they show off a bit and they flash right by, no mag flipping or any of that bullshit
i mean it's visibly a long time, i dont really know how to explain it but it's just slow like if you look at borderlands reload times on those guns, they show off a bit and they flash right by, no mag flipping or any of that bullshit
I suppose they made it like that because they need to balance the guns out. Auto snipers = longer reload according to valve. [sp]Of course it doesn't matter anyway cause nobody uses that gun in the first place. [/sp]
clearly it's a matter of priorities.
Which means it's a good idea to polish the gun anims in an FPS game, the character anims in a TPS/RPG, and so on. Say whatever you want, but it's inevitably going to make the game look like shit when you have see the damn thing thousands of times. Also, play BF3, RO2 or any other game with fantastic animations, you're lying to yourself if you don't think it makes the gunplay immensely satisfying.
I prefer a simplistic animation. No special movements like throwing your gun upside down or shit like that. Just a nice flow all around. (See Killing Floor again, the pistol accomplishes what you want without 1)taking up space and 2)making it seem over the top)
you know what game had some beautiful animations Assassins Creed Brotherhood. Getting Ezio to pull of a killstreak was fucking beautiful, watching him dance around the battlefield [
Killing Floor has one of the best reload animations, imo.
Yeah I haven't really noticed the animation issues with CSGO. I mean they're not great, but they don't strike me as particularly bad either. Maybe I just don't notice that stuff as much.
now that's some good shit.
You know the triple-A titles went wrong somewhere on the way if they are outdone by MODDERS who do mods FOR FREE in animation department. Like The anims on Cry Of Fear shown here. Why are the big companies bested by people who do animations in their spare time?
I don't see a problem with CSGO's anims. A lot of people say that CSS's anims were better, but honestly, I am mind-fucked by that statement. CSS's animations were bad. The origin of the model made everything look puny and the animations were so stiff and robotic, no easing or anything. They were so bad I reskinned every weapon to have different animations. As for CSGO, they're not awesome animations but I'm perfectly fine with them. They're a lot more lively and smooth than CSS.
I've always felt that (aside from the unnecessary magazine-flipping) the Call of Duty series has got weapon animations down pretty well
Yeah. I even occasionally shoot off a round just to watch the reload animations.
Zero Vector, I'll agree that most of your showcased reload animations were sub-par (mostly in terms of smoothness, not 'concept') , but I prefer them over the ones you confronted them with. Reload and draw animations in my opinion should be in the background, quick and to the point. If you make them spectacular, it'll wear off quickly and after that become more annoying than something subtle that simply fits in. I would like to add however that sound is a big factor to me when it comes to reload animations (and firing of course), and I see very few games producing a smacking and clicking as satisfying as that ofCrysis 2 weapons.
As an animator... this infuriates me.
because in the real world we have something called deadlines aka we cant dick around with animations all the time when we've got a fucking game to make
A couple of years is enough time to polish anything, a few gun animations are not that time consuming, even when you have 40 or so of them.
One game with some of the best animations I've seen is Max Payne 3. Everything about that game just felt so fluid. Skip to 1:21
If you spent most of the game looking at the pwetty gun animations you would probably die constantly, that is already a problem in CS so not even watching what you are doing is even worse I don't even notice animation problems because I get into the game almost instantly
