Portalized - Back and Better Than Ever - Scalable Movable Portals

Nullsquared, I don't realise why you don't set up an SVN and release a beta now. I know you wanted proper puzzles and a story, but right now all people want to do is a simple mess about. You would be able to get more improvements and you would make people very happy releasing it now, and I see no reason not to (apart from any technical issues you may need to sort out).
I think he should wait, it will be even more epic if we get all epicness at once instead of in small portions.

I'm doing this for personal experience (college is a long time apart :(), not to make people happy. For all I care, I can easily decide to not release it at all ;) There's that, and I don't want Portalized to be a portal-tech fuck-around. It's meant to be a game, and it will be a game.
Also, try not to send me stupid-as-fuck private messages:
Hi how did you manage to make the portals?
No offense or anything, but what do you want, a 1, 2, 3 step process?

I was going to say "I feel for you", but any pity for the human race I just had was destroyed when I read that.
Great job man, I can only hope the release goes well.
Have you tried raytracing with the portals? It's a very simple line of code, too,pm me if you want.
The code is about 3 lines log :D
a beta release is not meant to have the full story or anything. Remember the halo 3 beta? Did that have any story mode?
You can get around to story when you make a full release.
I don't want Portalized to be a portal-tech fuck-around.
That's OK, but I think you underestimate the amount that people want a "portal-tech fuck-around".
I'm doing this for personal experience (college is a long time apart), not to make people happy
I don't see how you doing this for "personal experience" actually affects your standing on making people happy, that is unless you want to antagonise by stretching the whole sequence out.
It's meant to be a game, and it will be a game.
If you are so adamant to create a game and not just to have people in awe of your portals, then why is it that you are releasing these tech demo videos? All you are doing is lining up another set of people who are interested in a beta/release version only for you to bash them down. It seems almost futile that you would be updating us with 'tech' information only to act bemused when we want to play around with the 'tech' side of it only. I note that there has been no update storyline wise what-so-ever
Another reason that people would want some sort of down-loadable copy of your to-be game is because you almost seem too willing to drop it. On the first page you state;
Lately I've been getting a bit bored, and started to wonder why. Guess what? I was losing motivation.
I suppose this would be fine on its own, you are 14 after all and must have other things to work on. But when coupled with this;
I need a multi-page thread with comments and ideas and stuff to keep me coding
It starts to become evident that the only reason you were getting bored is because you felt you didn't have enough attention, what with your last thread rising up against you; annoyed with your attitude towards others. For one I can sympathise with them.
It seems crazy; you obviously want the attention of the board yet when people show interest in release you rant about your wishes for this to be a game and not anything else. It's virtually futile and it's no wonder you ran into trouble with your previous thread (even getting banned at times).
Although it would be a lot more prestigious to release a completed game as beta, or even skip beta altogether, it doesn't quite seem possible. The only indication I've seen that you have any plot line at-all is the quote below.
I'm not showing any game-play
Though even that's questionable
NOTE: I'll reply to you if you indeed dignify me with one, but for now I need to sleep. Will reply as soon as possible

Ok.
It doesn't. All I said is that the purpose here is not to make people happy (no problem if it does, obviously), but rather for me to gain experience.

Tech info is such that you see what's going to be possible. There's no way to cram everything the object is possible of into a portal fuck-around.

Ok, I'm an attention whore. Feel better now that this is cleared up :D?

Heh. Do you even know why I argued and got banned? Obviously not, due to your ignorant attitude. Try reading around page 10-15 on that thread.

That's right - I'm showing tech videos, and no game-play. I don't know of any trailer for a game that actually tells about the whole story. What's the point of the story, then?
Another reason I'm not releasing yet is because I know people will be annoying about bugs that I'm obviously aware of.
"You can see the portal volume when you're behind the portal."
Uh, yeah, because the current test is the way the portals are meant to be observed. It basically lends the bugs to you.
"There's no back to the portals!"
Ok?
"There's iterations of non-linked portals!"
Do you really think I didn't notice that, or know about it from code?
And so on. It gets annoying. And then there's people who don't read descriptions where I purposely write out all of the current bugs I'm working on and there's no reason to bother me about - so they annoy me.

On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. Tis a silly palce.
Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail.
Star please :D
Also, what happens if you just keep going through a huge portal and getting bigger and bigger until you get as big as the room? :v:
I don't think it would be possible.
You would become too large to fit through the smaller portal, as shown by the block not being able to go through.
If people like portals so much why don't they play Prey? Prey also has scalable portals and plus you get to kill children.
If people like portals so much why don't they play Prey? Prey also has scalable portals and plus you get to kill children.
Ha, funny statement there. Instead of handling it myself, I'll let everyone else explain the differences. The only thing I'll say is that Prey has no scalable portals - the whole "small planet" thing was another part of the level.

Why don't you stop being 100% defensive over any criticism aimed at you. So what if it's another part of the level, it's still 'scaling you down'
Why don't you stop being 100% defensive over any criticism aimed at you. So what if it's another part of the level, it's still 'scaling you down'
It's not "scaling you down". It's "transporting you to another, bigger clone of the same thing". That's much different. I'll stop being defensive when you show me Prey's portals dynamically moved and scaled to arbitrary parts of a level.
But you can't do that. So, instead of telling people it's the same thing when it's not and it's rather irrelevant, just don't post ;)
Edit: Wow, I get dumber on every post, ha. Too bad there's no grammar check for Firefox. Maybe some plugin, anyone know?
Butthurting every time someone compares his things to something else. Case and point.
Seriously null, about the only thing people care about is the end result - whether it's scaling you down or scaling everything else up, at least we can play Prey.

There is, it is automatically in. Do you have the FF 3 Beta?

That's what I'm saying - the end result is not the same. There's that, and Prey doesn't scale anything. It's just a different part of the map.

Can you make a wide one and come out fat?
I guess I'll never know, because you're not on msn.
Please stop talking about prey nullsquared, before there's another flamewar.

The view would be stretched, since your head is stretched, including your eyes.
Also,welcome new alt.
Who's a new alt?

You can, but the view will not be correct. If it scales non-uniformly, there'd need to be a separate physics simulation for each portal simulation. But that wouldn't be correct since portals link to the same world, leading to the same world being simulated in multiple ways. It'd break the world, to put it simply.

Sure.
On second thought, maybe I should wait until I write a background story for where the star came from. Hold on a sec:
"It all started about 10,000 years ago..."
THis ought to take a while...
hope you don't mind the wait while I write this...

You need to download a dictionary for it before it works, but it's built in.

could someone do the old e3 levels of portal if possible when its released
could someone do the old e3 levels of portal if possible when its released
Couldn't you just do those in Hammer and play them in portal, instead of waiting for a beta that will never happen?
Holy fuck now there are scaleable portals?! I gotta have this game NOW!!!
