How do you jungle effectively? Especially as a non-jungle hero?
I think I got a feel for the rhythm of Dota now- the heroes, laning, when and when not to push etc. The problem now is that mid-game I'm usually not as leveled as everyone else or well-geared. How do I improve how much gold/exp I'm getting especially as a non-jungle hero like Ogre Magi?
Thanks
Don't try and do camps you know will be too hard, i.e. Ursa warriors and shit, just spam your spells on them really is all you can do on a hero like ogre.
but on a hero like ogre magi, you should gank instead to keep up with levels and gold, it's more a case of knowing when and when not to be in lane rather than knowing how to jungle on non jungle heroes.
blegh. just got into this heated argument with my friend who is a avid LoL player, disliking DotA and believes that it is easy to deny, harass, zone, and farm at the same time, and that any scrub who went into dota can do it; also firmly stating that it is so much more easy than LoL.
D:
Well before I got into DotA I had around 1700 games in LoL, amd I didn't find DotA really all that hard. Harder, more complicated and more fun than LoL for sure, but the first problems really were just only about learning how to use the shop & courier, camera and such, then was learning what each hero does (Dotacinema helped me immensely in this, I didn't have to look through every hero since I had watched Dotacinema's videos) and the items. Denying wasn't all that difficult either once I got used to it in the first botgame.
So although DotA wasn't hard for a LoL player like me, it was way much more fun. The difficulty in LoL was really all about that that everyone in it is a Tanky DPS with a stun, a gapcloser and skills which scale in a way that they are best to be built like current metagolem (stack HP, Armor and Magic Resist, still deal more damage than glass cannons). I hated playing like that so getting into DotA was a big relief.
Tell him dota is a lot more complicated than LoL, and indeed more rewarding, and stop arguing after that.
That way, you both can believe what you want to believe.
as a once fledgling wc3 dota player and a then-LoL player, I highly disagree. I was in the top 0.3% pool of ranked players at one point in LoL, and I'm in moderate MMR right now in Dota 2
I just played with a SK who fed. I mean how do you even feed with SK? I hate 90% of the playerbase so much.

How to jungle as a jungling hero;
Follow the obvious path.
Aka, get the spell that gives you summons, lifesteal, etc first.
How to jungle as notjungling heroes;
You don't.
Ogre Magi is usually higher level, and has a nice gold income, if done right.
He is supposed to get some levels, and then gank.
He is classified under support and ganker, so if you are on the same lane as a carry, let him take ALL last hits.
If you are on same lane with a support/ganker, take what you need.
Once you have arcane boots you should start running around the map killing random people.
As long as you stay in lane you will get xp from creeps.
Getting Arcane Boots within 10 min is fine, after that you rush scepter.
Bloodlust is incredibly powerful in every way.
Also, when jungling, start with easy camps, depending on what hero you are.
You can do some hard camps, like Satyr ones, meanwhile at the same strength level you can't kill Ursas, wildkins or trolls.
When playing as a lifesteal hero, you generally take the easy camp, then medium, getting lifesteal every time you can, and some damage spell after that.
When playing as a summoner hero, you can start with the medium camp if you want to, but most people do the easy one.
Some heroes can do hard camps at level 1. (Chen)
Ancient camps are generally reserved for when you are well farmed, and need a quick money increase.
To avoid being behind in levels, try to leech assists when possible, and don't leave lane before you are ready to gank/do whatever.
man i gotta play phantom lancer more. so much fun when you run around with a billion piss-ghosts confusing the fuck out of the enemy
i got pet hotkeys so whenever i doppelwalk to get away i run in one direction and make my clone run in the other so more often than not my pursuers go after the clone
too gud
A tip to not be XP starved - try to say in lane as long as you can. I found that early in my Dota 2 career I was a bit behind in XP most of the time but not these days. I've found that I very rarely go back to base.
I have usually 3-6 tangos with me which will last me through the laning phase. Whenever I get low, I go eat a tree and go back to farming. If there's anything I need I get it by courier, but I pretty much never go back unless I get killed or something.
You know, sometimes i hate this game. I queued with a friend in the Eu zone, and we found 3 russians on our team.
I dont hate russians but holy hell, what they say its true. They were intentionally sending the courier into the enemy lines, feeded on purpose, took on a fed huskar 1 vs 1 when he was level 18 and they were level 8. On top of that they were screaming into the mic. Never had a game like that. Jesus Christ if im full of rage.

I find sanctuary in the SEA and China servers. I have yet to met a single troll Russian :'D
How come you're the only one who makes the dota threads banned?
I got Dota 2 yesterday and I can't stop playing, very fun game.
Just thought I'd drop by and say hi. I like long walks on the beach, and my favourite guy to play as is Viper.
hello there, there's a lot of shitheads in the community so I'd play a bunch of bot matches before jumping into the public matchmaking
Every ganker hero should be played the same:
1. Get few early levels, 6 to 7 recommended.
2. Get core item and boots. (Urn/Bottle, Medallion)
3. Move around the map killing shit.
In case of Ogremagi: You can get soulring on him. He has the HP pool to support it and it provides the HP regen for it anyways. I usually get both Arcanes and soulring on him regardless = never run OOM.
Soulring is ridiculously good item, as long as you are/have:
1. Not meant to take much damage
2. Have a way to heal back
3. Have the HP pool to support it
Ogremagi has Huge-ass str gain, Leoric has the lifesteal and bullshitload of HP on top of that.
Bane has his Brainsap and Omni naturally heals up like the fucker he is. People should build the item more often IMO.

Another tip: Learn what every hero does, it makes it easier to counter or know what to expect.
I recommend trying out most of the heroes too, while viper is nice there may be a class you like more. It's always nice to play more than one hero.

or actual wc3 class

Sorry, have a bad habit of calling them classes.
I fixed it.

Enigma can start hard camp if he starts basilius and microes effectively
Hey, whats the most annoying team comp you can think of playing against? All AoE rape, like Shadow Fiend, Tide, Enigma, ES, Naga etc.? Or something else?
Is having multiple scepters really a common enough build on OD to warrant having lines specifically for it? :v:

most annoying team to play vs has to be a split push lineup with prophet tinker etc
Enigma can start hard camp if he starts basilius and microes effectively
He can, but it's more efficient to start with the small camp as fast as you can, as you can potentially make it respawn (kill it in less than 30 seconds).

Just try
Tide, Treant, Lich. No more needed in terms of teamfights unless they're super tanky.

I was close on Invoker, 4.5-ish, but a shitty game not too long ago pushed me down to a 4 or so.
My Sniper's at 4.5 though so

My Sniper is at like 0 bars almost. Holy shit he's hard to play unless you can farm a lothar's quick enough
lol sniper is like the easiest hero
Except anyone with any sense will just feed off of him. It's really easy to bully a sniper in the early game.
Invoker is a really simple hero, much like Viper. You should try him. :downs:
By the way, we can play together if you'd like. I have like 144 wins but i'm a fucking scrub so it will be an adventure for both of us!
I really wish I had seen the warnings before starting a co-op bot game with Invoker.
My Sniper is at like 0 bars almost. Holy shit he's hard to play unless you can farm a lothar's quick enough
you need to know how to stay away from danger as he is squishier than jelly, but he does a lot if he gets farm and kills
