I'm resetting for a shiny Entei/Raikou in my Japanese HG right now. If anyone wants a shiny Johto starter, they are easy to hunt for because you can see if they are shiny before you even pick them (for anyone who didn't already know that). Here's a Cyndaquil I got last week:

Jesus christ, I really have to question why you can dedicate a ridiculous amount of time to resetting and sitting through the opening sequence just to see if you can get a shiny starter.
You can press a series of buttons and it'll restart from your last save.
Still a huge time sink though.

Yeah just save in front of Elm's little pokeball station thing and to reset you just hold start+select+L+R. This resets the game, not the DS, so it's better for your battery and faster. And you don't have to go through the entire opening sequence.
