Did the word ditto come from the pokemon or did the pokemon get the name from the saying "ditto"?

The saying came first. Most pokemon have names that are mashups or copies of real life words or phrases.
Obviously the Pokemon got the name from the saying, not the other way around.

It's not a one off though, you can get 500 dittos in the same game without trading, also it can breed, just not itself.

I love how as a kid I learnt new words from Red & Blue as well as from the pokemon's names.
So what would be the optimal starters for you guys for gen 5? I'd like to see a grass/flying, at least.
Psychic/Ghost/Dark. Zoroa/ark being a starter.
Grass/Fire/Water starters are getting boring.
If it has to be those.
Grass/Flying like you said would be cool.
Fire/Steel
Water/Bug
Not especially good, or useful, but more unique.
I know there's been a grass/flying (that plant with 17 wings or something), but I was thinking more along a green bird.

Mewtwo (in HG/SS) is freaking hard to catch. I had it down to around 5-10 hp, it was a sleep and I used 30 ultra balls, only 2 went to three shakes, none of them caught it.
Also it rarely uses Psycho Cut (its only move that hurts) so I was fighting it with a level 13 Stantler, it was the only Pokemon that I had that could put it a sleep.
Fire/Water/Grass, why fix waht ain't broken?

I caught Mewtwo with a Pokeball, without putting him to sleep. Took me ages, and he actually killed himself twice using Struggle. I musta spent over an hour trying to catch him. I had nothing else to do that day, but what the hell. :P
