Like I said in another thread, I hope to christ the industry is having growing pains and this shit won't drag on. Devs need to kill huge franchises and get that 90's flare back.
What sucks is the Indie Devs are largely ignored unless they're garnering millions of dollars, like Minecraft. It took a sale on Darwinia by Steam to save Introversion. If people paid more attention to other devs like Introversion, Tripwire and (for the sake of the fact the guys who run the company graduated from my University) Retro Effect get completely ignored. These damn console devs sit there with their thumb up their asses when they release DLC to be bought and companies previously were able to release maps for free and not lose profits.
Don't get me wrong, there is actually an element of truth to what this man is saying. The community is going down the shitter and its not entirely the developers. Its also the critics and the reviewers who will rate one game poorly because its different, new or contrary to their own personal tastes but then give something like Call of Duty:BOps or Super Mario *insert title here* because of fucking nostalgia. The last generation are the ones reviewing these games and they're hell bent on keeping the nostalgia within it while ignoring completely competent games who either are trying to actually POINT OUT something (Farcry 2 IMO was largely missed) or just trying to be fun and creative (Mod Nation Racers being compared to Mario Kart).
I'd say they were pretty innovative in taking guns in 1968, and putting flip up iron sights made in the early 2000s on them, backwards.
They didnt even get the 1968 part right.

COD appeals so well because its so simple and easy to get used to. My brother plays a ton of console games and the main reason he won't play PC games is because he thinks the controls would be too complicated.
Thats one of the reasons they haven't changed it for the past 3 games, so that people don't get thrown off by some new mechanic or in case the game becomes too complex for them.
Seriously. I miss the days of call of duty 2 where it actually was fun to play it. Now its all either AC130 ABOOOVE RAPEEE SPAWN KILLLZZZZ or CHOPPA GUNNEEER SPAWWWN RAAAAPEEE. I use to like to sneak around as sniper shooting people and holding the headquarters. Now i just either get raped by lag (black ops) or raped by gay with a choppa gunner.
... i need to re-buy CoD2

Simple and easy controls are fine, its good to have a control set that everyone can pick up easily and run off with to go nuts and have fun. My objection is to the two faced attitude that CoD after 2 tries to pull of.

I never said that was a bad thing, if anything its the only good thing they've kept going throughout the series.

But I also think its stupid that he won't even try PC games when its not even more buttons used in most FPS games. Hell, for RTS you can just use the mouse if you want..
Solution: Keep Cowadooty on the xbox

At the same time, most games I have use every single key on my keyboard (at my own doing of course).
Plus, I don't know what they did but Black Ops was significantly funner and more entertaining than any other Call of Duty Ive played, WaW to me was boring (probably because I played entirely too many WW2 shooters in my youth.) and MW2 was a pile of shit that I only played until they patched the care-package rage glitch.
They did something with that game that made it a notable game in my eyes, and I respect them for that.

What was the 90's flare?
I like choice. The pc gives me that.
Want to tweak your graphics? sure
Want to mod the game a bit? sure
Want to change the controls? sure
Want to use a gamepad? sure
Want to install new maps? sure
This is what devs don't seem to understand. It's no wonder people complain that the PC is dying when devs keep ignoring the core reasons why people play on the PC rather than consoles.
Just because something is popular, doesn't mean it's good.
not true with games
games generally have to be at least decent to be popular
but it is all different tastes
The Activision motto (this applies to all their devs):
Dig yourself a nice big hole, sit in it, then complain about it.
Actually this is all quite funny considering what my mum said to me the other day:
Mum: "So do you play that game, 'Medal of Honor: Call of Duty'?"
Me: "Er... No, I don't. They are two separate games."
Mum: "Oh... I thought they were the same."
The thing is, despite how it may sound, my mum isn't stupid and is usually quite clued up on these sorts of things. It's more of an example of just how unimaginative and repetitive some of the games out there are becoming.
What was the 90's flare?
Being able to pop out original game ideas without being afraid of losing money because its not a copy of something else. Devs would create all kinds of crazy shit back then but now everything is a BLATANT copy. At least back then they were smart about how they did it like they did with streets of rage.

To be fair, they look incredibly similar.

If you didn't know better, you'd swear they were the same engine.
Another guess about the lack of innovation could also be linked to piracy. Profit margins are probably a lot less than they used to be so a company has to shift a lot of copies to make good money, if you dare to try a new feature it will either flop or take off, a lot of companies aren't willing to take the risk of it flopping so look to create something they know will work but add a few shiny bits to make sure it'll sell.
I disagree with this point. Profit margins are higher than ever thanks to console ports. Now a studio only needs to develop one game and sell it 3 (or more) times. The amount of money "lost" by piracy is bandied around, but it's not as though they ever had that money in the first place.
Besides, what the shit does this have to do with innovation? Companies want to go with the sure thing to make money off the masses. People will pirate the game regardless; I'd bet the more popular and hyped a game is, the more people are gonna "steal" it.

Pretty much any game that lets you aim down sights is a Call of Duty 2 or 4 clone. And any game that just has a circle for the reticule tends to be a scifi game. Like Halo, Doom, and Quake.
Treyarch says 'We like our work, we do money for nearly nothing'
The biggest threat to innovation is publishers scoffing at every pitch that isn't for a console fps but Treyarch would of course be ignorant to this

XBL seems to have more immature kids on it than PSN does, in my experience at least. I've not really met anyone who's clearly a brat just on to annoy people or smack talk after every kill on PSN.
Boot up crysis 2 multiplayer demo.
Play for a while.
Fall asleep on couch.
Wake up, it's in the middle of a match.
'Oh look, I was playing some COD and I fell asleep, I should go invite my friends.'
Invite friends, they message me saying they don't have the demo downloaded yet.
Unfortanatly this actual happened to me.

I somehow doubt that and your attempt at being funny is poor.

From my experience no one ever talks on the PSN. Then again I only played on the PSN for a few days at my friend's house.

Quite often yes but hardly anyone is a bone idle fool. I'd rather have quiet and capable than someone who talked. Half the time they turn into a bossy retard.
Innovation? Coming from the company that produces Call of Duty mods.
Quite often yes but hardly anyone is a bone idle fool. I'd rather have quiet and capable than someone who talked. Half the time they turn into a bossy retard.
This is also the reason why there's a mute function.
what
how did they re-release mw2 with world at war when world at war came out before it????
What? After MW2 they reused MW2.
What's so innovative about taking both the name and concept of "gungame" straight from the original CSS/CS dev's hands and putting it in your game without credit?
Maybe they should realize that "fans" aren't mad at the industry, they are mad at them. They make millions off of re-using concepts that games did ten years ago and calling it the first of its kind, dumbing it down for children and loud "pros".
