Am I the only one that thinks Half-Life 2 is a little overrated?

It was amazing for 2004, but it hasn't exactly aged well. I still think the story is great, but there have been better. You would enjoy it more if you had played it earlier.
It's a bandwagon thing. I've always thought it was overrated(specifically by Facepunch).
And as the above poster said, it really depends on when you played it. I did not play it in 2004. Meaning, while still a good game, it wasn't nearly as impressive as it should have been to me.
Gonna go off topic a bit, but look at this picture of Fred Flinstone fucking crusty the clown up the ass
also, what the hell
how is flipflop not banned yet

Or some people genuinely like it, as some people genuinely dislike CoD.
Bandwagon isn't a trump card you know, it just makes you look like a fool.

My Eyes... they cannot unsee what has just been seen :ohdear:
EDIT: HL2 is extremely awesome if you play with maxed out settings, its really amazing actually.
Yeah cool.
That would be
great.
Thank you.
Alright then, no worries! Let's get back to hating me and discussing HL2!

Well this thread was shat on

We don't hate you simply because you dislike Half-Life.
In fact, I appreciate that you actually present your points in a mature manner.

if you want it to be!
I have to admit, the general premise of hl2 is a pretty generic railroad FPS. If one were to look here and there you would be hard pressed to find amazing gameplay elements which haven't been done before.
What hl2 excels at are the characters and atmosphere. Just this line taken directly from the OP illustrates the point fairly well.

The First time you played Half Life 2, did you understand all these details about the Combine, that they kicked ass in 7 Hours, and that they took over the world and turned into this weird communist society, because I did not get it the first time I played. And maybe that was just me.

I have my doubts that even you didn't instantly get the feel that something just isn't right. Why is everyone dressed the same, why does everyone seem to afraid and down.
The fact that there are things which you miss at first doesn't detract from it (as you actually do notice them and they tend to fill the atmosphere). This actually gives hl2 some replayability which is something which most new FPS games tend to lack.
if you claim that you didn't instantly get a feel that something is not right then you're probably an emotional hunk of ice.
Part of it is the graphics, but you have to remember this was 2004.
Here's a shot from the beta, which was probably around '03.

Here's a shot from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which was also released in '04.

See, for the time, the graphics were great, and that helped towards its appeal.
Half-Life 2 is more about gameplay in the first person PERSPECTIVE, than actual first person combat, which is why many people tend to be disappointed.

Maybe that is something. I can rememeber my first playthrough, and just thinking
"The fuck is up with all the suits? Who's he? Is he a dictator? Wow, dick cop. Don't hit me."
"God, this place sucks ass. What happened?"
I only played the game to see what the hype surrounding it was about, I still don't see why it's so popular. It's a decent game but nothing more. That's just my opinion though.
But it did have great graphics.
While HL2 was great, it certainly was not the best game ever.
You missed out on the time period when it was good. So yes, now it is just a generic shooter, but back in 2004 on release date, it was better than sliced bread.

The only reason I own HL2 is the Orange box. And I got it for PORTAL, of all things.
I wanted Portal because the internet made it seem fun.
The weird thing is, I played Portal for a bit, went "Oh fuck this"
Booted up TF2, became addicted, then played HL2
to this day I have not finished Portal

Maybe that's the other thing. I beat this game in 2008. I had already played awesome stuff like Bioshock, Dead Space, Mass Effect, and a plethora of other shooters already available.
Actually I'm not 100% when I played all those games, but it was sometime.
I have to agree with you CommanderMayhem I just don't know what people see in it.

This. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't THAT great.
What I don't really like is when people say Gordon Freeman is the best character ever. I mean I know there is opinions and such ,but he just has no personality.

Fab mod more like ninja mod.

Some people think Valve meant to do that, to heighten immersion.
Although, I really don't see how people can argue for him as a character either, considering he's what you make of him. (except for M.I.T, works/ed at Black Mesa)

This review explains things a lot better than I do.
Half-Life 2 is a game you could easily be disappointed with, depending on how you choose to perceive it...
You like the original Bioshock and yet you complain about how generic HL2 is?

My take on the on games included in the Orange Box.
- Half-Life 2 & both Episodes were decent games
- Portal was enjoyable but I can't be assed to finish it.
- Team Fortress 2 was fun but the only reason I still play is because my friends do, other than that I never touch it.
You know what, after re-reading these comments and the thread, I think I need to look at Half Life again. I think I need to do another playthrough. Soak everhything in.
Just gonna install a mod to help the graphics though. FakeFactory's cinematic mod. Makes the game better.
[sp]dear god that was a joke[/sp]
