Am I the only one that thinks Half-Life 2 is a little overrated?
You like the original Bioshock and yet you complain about how generic HL2 is?
I don't see how these games are comparable enough to use that argument.
My take on the on games included in the Orange Box.
- Half-Life 2 & both Episodes were decent games
- Portal was enjoyable but I can't be assed to finish it.
- Team Fortress 2 was fun but the only reason I still play is because my friends do, other than that I never touch it.
Team Fortress 2 used to be my damn life. Now I just collect virtual hats.
Fuck TF2. I'm gonna buy Monday Night Combat.
I only played the game to see what the hype surrounding it was about, I still don't see why it's so popular. It's a decent game but nothing more. That's just my opinion though.
But it did have great graphics.
Its something you have to dig deeper to get. The game play was good but not great but the characters and story that you learn more about during the game is what set it apart. also since I knew some basic things about half life one did help me guess that they were aliens.

They're not really comparable.
Anyways. I liked Half Life 2 for it's story, not it's length. Besides, the game opened so many doors with modding. Then again, if he didn't have source mods we'd probably have more useful Oblivion/Fallout mods. i suppose the gaming community would've benefited either way.

Bioshock isn't generic
any game where you're fucking shooting bees out your goddamn wrists is not generic
any time there's a mothafucka with a Drill charging at you, and you shoot bees at him, and shoot him with your lightning shotgun, while your steam powered turret slams his ass, while a tiny frightened girl is behind him,
you know it's not generic
Some people think Valve meant to do that, to heighten immersion.
Although, I really don't see how people can argue for him as a character either, considering he's what you make of him. (except for M.I.T, works/ed at Black Mesa)
Well they did some pretty good immersion in Mass Effect and they gave the character a lot of well character. I know its not good to compare two totally different games ,but it just seems like that if they wanted to go for immersion they could of done better.

Bioshock was essentially System Shock 2, underwater. If you have experienced System Shock 2, then you have experienced Bioshock.
You forgot the part where the game was released in 2004, and most of these elements of gameplay were fairly new. Don't compare it to games released in the past 2 years.

Calling Bioshock generic is stupid. What you just said points out how it different from other shooters.

I really hated the ending/story, but the gameplay was okay, I guess.
I know right? That's kinda what I mean. People get violent if you talk shit about Half Life.
you're twelve, you are used to growing up with "realistic" intense games, you see half life 2 and you think "CLASSIC! GENERIC SHOOTER, NOT WORTH MY TIME!" You don't understand growing up with boring fps games which each new "groundbreaking" game would only upgrade in play style. You don't understand how much half life 2 has shaped gaming, and how dear it holds in our hearts as one of the best first person shooters ever. Don't get me wrong, it had it's faults and looking back now they become more and more apparent, but you have to realize that it is still an impressive milestone for gaming.

I'm 15 just so we're clear
And I understand the time period is important. Frankly, I believe people will look back and be confused as to some of the games I thought were so amazing.
I need to re-evaluate HL2. I will replay it for you guys.
Back in '04 it was a revolution. A lot of games based themselves on it, that's why it seems generic if you play it now. Same with graphics, back in '04 they were the most amazing thing ever, right now they're pretty bland.
The thing HL2 really shines on even right now is facial animations. It's a big part of the immersion but most games I see today can't even make their characters look alive :colbert:

Kinda proving his point there you're defending it pretty hard.
I agree that it was very overrated, I enjoyed it but I certainly would not call it the best game ever.
Firstly, the combat was pretty repetitive. I found myself just trying to get through it as fast as possible to get to the next story related scene. Sure the gravity gun was new, but the other weapons were the pretty generic lineup of pistol, smg, ar, shotgun ect.
Even then the gravity gun was not so impressive, while it was fun chucking shit at people it got old pretty quick for me and left me pretty disappointed - does anyone else remember the trailer where the player pulled letters from a sign and threw it at a strider? I was disappointed there was nothing dynamic in the environment like that.
Furthermore the game seemed really unfinished, to me the various different environments seemed haphazardly put together, and I lot of things seemed really last-minute. Like how the smg shoots grenades, where do they come from?
Anyway I probably made that sound a lot worse than it is, I'm just saying why I really don't think it's a perfect game.

To be honest, I didn't like Mass Effect's "immersion". You'd choose what seems like a pretty neutral response to someone, and Shepard would say something completely different from what you chose.
However, I didn't have much trouble "getting into" either Mass Effect, or Half-Life. I think they're two different, effective, techniques.
I appreciate a lot of old games despite not getting into gaming til a few years ago and I do agree that HL2 was impressive for its time.
That doesn't mean everyone has to love it.

Sure bioshock was good but the respawn tanks took out the realism or challenge. Half-life was different because it was the first to use story in the way it did and I would say best story I have seen in a game. deep does not always = good when it comes to story.

Bioshock had a fantastic story. I don't know what y'all are talking bout.
Also, I palyed Bioshock on Hard mode with Vitas Disabled. I have to say, it was a fantastic experience. Everyone should go for it.

Oh yeah that did kinda bother me too. Sometimes the options just kinda summed up what you could say. It worked most of the time I guess ,but other times it just didn't come out right.

That's the point. It was sorta the gist of what he was about to say
>You don't have evidence! =THAT"S BULLSHIT, SAREN'S A DICK, YOU GUYS ARE BLIND
> I did what I had too = It was a tough choice, but there was no right answer.

Probably because that's how they should've made Normal, but I digress.
The story was awful, in particular the ending. It's like every single person living in Rapture not effected by Adam (Ryan, professor lady I can't remember the name of) are as retarded as those who have.
If they had any brains at all, they could have stopped the self-destruct of the city, as well as solving a lot of the problems with Fontaine incredibly easily.
The story itself had no transitions, nothing that advanced anything. I also heavily disrespect the developers for tacking on a Bioshock 2, which had an even worse story, only to cash in on the relative success of Bioshock.
While the shooting mechanics aren't exactly special (Except the gravity gun, as you've stated). Something about the gameplay appeals to me. Everything else I can agree with though, especially the mute protagonist. "You're Gordon Freeman" my ass.

But that's the thing, it is the gist, but it's like they forgot the most important of human conversation, which is indicating the tone/attitude you're going to have, as well as the intensity.
It wasn't horrible, but it could really have been much better.

Anyone who truly understood Bioshock knew there was no fucking reason for Bioshock 2. The story was told. The Hero left, the villains lost, THE END.
