Am I the only one that thinks Half-Life 2 is a little overrated?
Half Life 2 has a boring campaign in my opinion, i think it's shit once you've already completed it, same with Episode 1 and 2, they have absolutely no replay value.
I've played through it, completely, about 10 times and I'm still not bored with it.
Personally I'm getting a bit thrown off with all this "is it overrated?" business because all of it's based on opinion. If the majority of people have proclaimed a game as good, then the consensus is that, indeed, the game is good. Whether or not a single individual enjoys the game is irrelevant to that consensus.
At any rate, I love Half-Life 2 just as much now as I loved it in 2004. While some of the combat and AI mechanics are detailed, few games have ever been able to pack so much variety and immersiveness into a cohesive world like Half-Life 2 does. Everything you do in the game feels like it has purpose and the side characters give you a reason to continue to your next goal. The level design is top-notch and contains tons of variety, which is thankful when you're playing a 15-hour shooter. Each gun has a unique situation that it's best suited for, meaning each battle requires a decent amount of thought.
Beyond all that, however, it's the story that truly shines. What makes it work so well is, as a poster above me said, the story is never told to you directly. It's left entirely up to the player and Valve's incredible attention to detail to piece together the story and find their own motivation. And then of course, there are all the little substories that flash into your mind along your journey, such as a simple torture chamber that makes you question "Who and why?"
I know I'm gushing here but Half-Life 2 honestly is one of my favorite games, and it probably will be for quite some time. It's not perfect (goddamn retard AI), but as an experience it's easily one of the most incredible ones in gaming.
I've always preferred HL over HL2.
You can't judge Half Life 2 six years after it's come out. It just doesn't work that way.
If you do, you have to judge it from the mindset of someone in 2004. Everything about the game was revolutionary at the time.
In Dead Space 2 Issac talks. :colbert:
In Dead Space 2 Issac talks. :colbert:
I'm pretty sure he was talking about the first Dead Space.
I didn't actually like the Half Life series at all. I tried playing them all, but I just couldn't. The story is nice and the environments; music... but I just couldn't get into it.
However, yes, I agree it's overrated. By a long shot.

So by that definition would you call Russia communism communist? well whatever definitions are just definitions.

Russian communism strayed from being true communism a long, long time before any of that Cold War nonsense.
Just because the government calls itself Communist doesn't make it so.
Half-life 2 for it's time was goddamn amazing but yeah, it's overrated as all fuck like many other games out there, Much better titles have come out and surpassed it in about every way. (some things like a likeable female lead on the other hand is still king in HL).
I don't know how good half-life is to todays games but I first played it in early 2007. I loved it and would put it into my top 5. Now that I think about it I cant give one great reason why I like it. its just a lot of little things adding up and I can see why some people dont like it.

But, whenever someone talks about the Greatest Vidya Game ever, it's almost always Half-Life 2.
who says this ever
even if people do say it they are entitled to their opinion and you are entitled to yours, people like a game you don't, get over it
Greatest video game ever is Ocarina of Time
there is no debate

I think that the Zelda Series in general is shit, deal with my opinions
It was great. But the water temple just made me cry.

There is a difference between saying you dont like this or that but saying zelda is shit should be listed under ban sentences or something.
Who is yet another faceless protagonist with almost no story ingame (read: ingame I don't care about the books) who is a generic supersoldier. Which there's nothing wrong with.
However, does what you're bringing up really have anything to do with the conversation at hand?
Halo does have a story if ever cared to play it and quite good to be honest but ANYONE on FP besides the people in the Halo thread go "LuLZ@#!!@ HALLO H4S n0 STORY CUS IZ GENERIC"
Ironically speaking Half Life series has the same generic story line and characters
they made a half life 2?
It had some good tech for it's time and it is really more of a platform. So many mods are out for it and some are quite lengthy. It's success is really because of the community that kept it alive. It's not about Half Life 2 anymore as much as it is the Source engine which is so flexible.
I honestly lost interest in Half Life since Valve seems to have put it on the bottom of their list.

I would agree halos 2s story was really good.
I just hope the next installment will bring something new and innovative to the series because the formula they have now is really stale in comparison to other modern games.

My opinion all them are great
My opinion all them are great
Well all were good but I think 2s did it the best because they showed both sides to the story.
I cannot take anyone who actually uses the word "overrated" seriously, well, seriously. It's a matter of opinion, and I'm amazed this isn't common sense for a lot of people. Whenever something gets "too popular", there's always going to be that one person that suddenly asks the grand question, "am I the only one that thinks game X is whatever?" It's amazing how this cycle continues with game after game and nobody seems to catch on. I'm happy you decided to express your opinion OP, but when I see the exact same thread only with different games over and over, it gets annoying and even routine. This topic shouldn't have gotten past the first page honestly.
It's from 2004 you stupid fuck. And it's still omazing.
I think Half-Life 2 is overrated, but it also lives up to it's name. Back in the day that was as clean cut as a shooter could get. There were no shit gimmicks or overdone cliches. The game play is varied the physics are still the most solid physics to date and the modifiability is phenomenal. Half-Life 2 was the introduction to the Source engine. It was a revolutionary engine with graphics that were photo realistic(in yesterday's terms).

whats omazing mean
I still haven't completed HL2 (the first one, I haven't even touched the episodes) and I've had it for a year or so...it's not that great.
It's an opinion, everybody has their own, and their all different.
whats omazing mean
Its outstanding and amazing at the same time.
I find Half Life 2 amazing, because it's so well rounded. There's nothing wrong with it, but there's very little that is "HOLY SHIT BEST THING EVER"
And that's good, You have games that have certain aspects of being the best fucking thing ever, but they fail in others. Half life 2 is a jack of all trades, but doesn't particularly excel in many factors other than being a jack of all trades.
I love HL2 but it's not for everyone. Won't hate on you if you like other games.
