• Am I the only one that thinks Half-Life 2 is a little overrated?

Thing is games like Half-Life didn't exist back when Half-Life released. Both the first and the second were milestones in the genre for both narrative, graphics and physics. (or at least the HL2 for the last two) Of course a game can't be good forever. But HL2 isn't overrated, it's just that if you played it 2008 or later it will seem just like any other FPS with a story. HOWEVER, when EP3 releases we can safely say that the Half-life series are the best FPS's again.
I'm assuming this thread is talking about Half-Life 2 and it's episodes. Therefore, what came out in 2007? So stop saying "The game came out in 2004, give it a break!". Valve has brought nothing new to the series for the past six years. The only thing they have done, is ever so slightly improving the source engine. Sure Half-Life is a classic series but there is nothing cool and innovative about it except for the gravity gun, in which it's fame has died down quite a lot these past years.
And what exactly is your guideline for what constitutes, ahem, 'new stuff'? Weapons? Enemies? Yeah, OK, sure, but that's a fairly simplistic and narrow way of looking at what's "new". I could argue a lot of the gameplay encounters in Episode 2 (obviously less so Episode 1) are new, because they constantly change scene per scene. You can't say that for, say, Call of Duty, because it's just shooting gallery after shooting gallery. You don't need to add new content to make 'new' gameplay. It's set piece based - scenarios. Defending the mine shaft against the Antlions; moving across the canyon sticking to thumpers; maneuvering across the industrial area whilst Alyx covers you; facing off the ambush at the inn; ducking through a junkyard to take out the auto-cannon and ultimately using the Magnusson Device's to take down the Striders attacking the Silo to name a few. That is new gameplay. If there's one thing that HL does right without a hitch it's constantly varied gameplay, and avoiding the mundane route of simply making the game a shooting gallery.

I think Half-Life 2 is probably my favorite FPS for the fact that it's a plane shooter with really great characters and story. The shooting is solid, and that's more than what can be said about most FPS' that come out now-a-days.
I think the only game that has something on Half life 2 is the first Far Cry. It came out 9 months before Half-life 2, in the beginning of 2004 if I remember correctly Far Cry then already had physics, I remember how awesome it was to blow up a helicopter and see all the pieces fall down. But Half life 2 took these things and went further, In Far Cry it was mainly eyecandy but in HL2 it was also used for gameplay purposes. EDIT: dat water
Llolololol funneh to taipe liek diss!
Well, its too linear for me, in a way of level design, and I haven't played all of it.
It's kinda generic.
You are obviously mistaking 'gameplay' for 'gunplay.' Half-Life 2's gameplay is anything but generic; it is very engaging, and multi-faceted.
Compared to games which have came out recently, it will look generic. But at the time of it's release it was amazing - and it still is a great game. It has a great story and there aren't really any massive problems with it. It's alot better then most of the games that have came out recently.
You definitely have the right to your own opinion, but I honestly rank Half-Life 2 as the absolute most fun single player game I have ever played. I usually get bored with games before I get close to beating them, but Half-Life 2 kept me hooked entirely to the end. I was like "aw, it's over?" when it ended rather than a "fuck yeah, I beat it!" I still remember starting a session of Half-Life 2 around 10pm planning to get off a few hours later, then I'd catch myself playing it at 5-6am. I loved every bit of HL2's campaign. I WAS sad when it was over (but I had Ep1 to start pretty soon after, so it was alright.) but it definitely didn't feel like the game was too short at all. Most satisfying single player campaign ever.
The game was amazing and brought many new things to gaming such as the telekinesis you use in dead space.
half life 1 was pretty innovative and a great game half life 2 is a great game but extremely overrated yes
I think back in the day it was awesome, but people (sometimes) treat it today like they would when it was released. It is still an awesome game though really.. sadly one I haven't completely beat. All the episodes at least.
I remember looking at this photo and thinking "Holy fuck ; it's exactly like real life."
Funny thing is that even today it still looks realistic. The graphic style Valve chose to go with ages well. Compare it to modern games and while they are superior, graphically, Half Life 2 usually looks more realistic.
COD PUMPS THE SHIT OUT OF half life for retarded little boys.... you don't even have cool guns like us look black ops spas in vietnam war :)))) with dragon fire breath and shit like that fuck you faggots playing squary hipster gamees. XDDDDD
I don't understand why people like half life 2, it's ugly as shit. Let's compare it: Half life 2: [img_thumb]http://www.deafgamers.com/04screenshots_a/half-life2pic3.jpg[/img_thumb] Crysis: [img_thumb]http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Pics-from-in-the-game-crysis-722279_1278_720.jpg[/img_thumb] You people must be blind if you think hl2 is better than crysis.
Because comparing a new game with an old game is fair. :downs:
Because comparing a new game with an old game is fair. :downs:
You're so :downs:
The game was released in 2004. At the time, it was the best of the best and practically revolutionised the game industry. Nowadays, there are obviously a lot of games that are up to its standard, but that is 7 years after the game was released.
Maybe you can say that about Half-Life 1, but I don't know about Half-Life 2. It may have revolutionized the FPS genre, but not the entirety of video gaming. It's not the next Mario, no matter how much you want to tell yourself that.
You're so :downs:
You're right. Why didn't Valve make spend more time on graphics and less time on gameplay, it's so stupid.
You're right. Why didn't Valve make spend more time on graphics and less time on gameplay, it's so stupid.
People are saying that the main thing they loved about Half-Life 2 were the great graphics at the time.
It was made with more love than any other game, that's why people love it, I think :h:
I thought the graphics were good for its time too, and the attention for detail was also great. I'm not sure why this guy was posting a picture of Crysis and then a picture of Super Mario Bros and then say Half Life 2's graphics were shit. It's like comparing Super Mario 64 to Sonic the Hedgehog ('06).
I don't understand why people like half life 2, it's ugly as shit.
Because graphics is the only thing that matters right?
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/02/Halo2_1.jpg[/img_thumb] Halo 2 and it's amazing graphics. Half life 2 looked amazing, had better gameplay than all of these, much more realistic physics, and it actually told a decent story with likeable characters beyond "SPACE MARINE #2032"
Why did you put Halo in a Half-Life thread. The two series don't seem to get along.
played hl1 hey this games fuckin cool! OH SHIT MODS?! THESE ARE COOL!! oh my god A SEQUEL HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME MORE MODS!??! YESS I grew up with half life, fuck you
While I am a fan of the Half life series I will always hold the Unreal series as superior in my mind and heart. The modability of UT99 by far surpassed Half Life.
I always thought half life 2 was a physics test with a story for the source engine. Physics puzzles and a hour long hover-boat sequence? Come on.
I always thought half life 2 was a physics test with a story for the source engine. Physics puzzles and a hour long hover-boat sequence? Come on.
There was a lot more to Half-Life 2 than that.
You have to have played it when it first came out to understand. It was way ahead of most games at the time.
I don't like Half-Life 2 but that's probably because I got it in like 2008 or something. I didn't find the story and atmosphere interesting enough to keep me through the boring gameplay. It's an alright game itself but I didn't like it.
Also, I'm one of the guys who discovered it when the source engine just became considered old, and I still love it more than most modern games.
