I like Bonemouse's Isabella, personally. It was a good alternative to Quandary.
The default is getting so stale

Ah, but now I have an idea. I'm building a Farmo-Shaft 2000. A very deep farm for different things. I specify on a terminal which farm to harvest, and KA-CHUNKA! The game will lag for a bit and the loot will be served up through pipes.

Ok so me and some of my friends are considering starting up a server, we have had a server a couple of times before so we wanted to do something different.
We want to sort of simulate a medieval kind of system sort of like a game of thrones version of minecraft. So are there any mods you know of that might help this?
We dont want the mods to force rules upon people though, just to provide a structure to make it easier to set up you're own lands and encourage backstabbing and trading.
For example we want someone to be able to declare a certain area is "their land" and tell other players certain rules to abide by in these lands but the consequences of breaking these rules would only be enforced by the players themselves not by some meta system.
We sort of like the look of the factions mod but we think it is too restricting.
So any mods you can think of that might help towards this and work on a server.

Also sgt. doom what is that texture pack you are using in your pic up there? It looks really nice
They don't seem to make any particular effort to follow a gravel path I set (20x20 square, path being 3 blocks thick), rather they just seem to not wander very far from their point of creation. I think iron golems that spawn naturally in large villages might have some extra behaviours, but not sure.
Try putting a house in the middle and spawn a villager inside.

Something like Towny, then?
Just to pop a quick question: What is the best maprenderer out there?
I'd try Carthograph but I heard it hasn't been updated in a while and it is outdated, what's the newest program to render these maps?
Came to the conclusion that i've fucked up on the tower.

Looks great on the outside, but on the inside the unevenness of the windows vertically really bothers me.
Decided to increase floor height to 8, making the floor itself 3 units thick (so it appears the same on the outside) and having the windows extend all the way from top to bottom. Bonus of having thick floors is I can have redstone run underneath the floor if needed, allow each floor to have different materials for the floors and ceilings without interfering with other floors, or have indoor swimming pools and the like.

Also looking to replace the pillars with some other method of light. I tried glowstone, but the light it gives off is rather ugly, and it would require that they were either positioned oddly or a lot of them to cover the same area. The current setup ensures no monsters can spawn inside while causing the absolute minimum of light leakage (lighting up the outside face of the tower)

D'oh, forgot to set brightness to normal before taking those pics :/
Guys is obsidian common in caverns where water and lava meet or is that the unbreakable rock?
Guys is obsidian common in caverns where water and lava meet or is that the unbreakable rock?
That's the obsidian, on the default texture pack it should be dark purple. Bedrock is black and grey, emits grey particles, and is too deep for lava and water to be found there.

What would be a good mod to make villages and villagers actually useful and interesting? I'm not that interested in something as far-reaching as Millenaire, i'm just looking for the current villages to be more interesting and useful e.g. being able to trade stuff with them.
Any of you guys know about this?
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/954519-adventure-lobbies-play-adventure-maps-with-friends-for-free-featured-on-the-shaft/
It's a free 5-man server hoster that boots up custom maps, or a random map at your choosing, 4 hours for free. Currently doing It's Better Together with a bud.
Anyone know a good server hoster for a small 8-man server?

Yourself.

Except for the fact that my computer refuses to cooperate with port forwarding.

What problem do you have?
What problem do you have?
No clue, honestly. I follow all the instructions, I remember I could port forward on my old computer, but it just doesn't work. Nothing happens.

Get hamachi and tell your friends to get it, thats how I'm hosting my server. I have the same problem as you.
Trying to connect to a server and getting this error:

Running 1.2.5 completely unmodded (first time playing MP and I have absolutely no idea how it reacts to mods)
EDIT: Added Minecraft.exe to firewall exceptions, now it gives same error but packet ID 122
Get hamachi and tell your friends to get it, thats how I'm hosting my server. I have the same problem as you.
Yeah I know about hamachi. But there's a limit of 5 in the network, which is annoying when you're trying to have all your friends on the server.

Hamachi can only support 5 people in a network now, unfortunately. At least the free version.

you can run Multiple networks though.
Nevermind. It just had a ton of hp.
Hamachi is pretty awful. Use Tunngle, it takes slightly longer to install and get working, but once you do it's pretty much unbreakable.
I started a new world with the seed "ToS" (no quotes)
Spawned in a lava pool.
What...
do you reckon I could run the gs/gl shader mod with these specs:
i5 2500K
8GB 1333Mhz
onboard intel HD 3000 graphics (equivalent to ATI HD5450)
thanks

I've been playing Minecraft since the Nether release back on alpha, yet it's only on this day, a year and a half later, that I first find my first map generation bug, if, of course, you exclude the Far Lands.
This happened on my good old 1.8.2 Beta map - where I was building a floating city, gave it a break, and decided to resume the project lately - when I was exploring the map, looking for NPC villages (as I had blown up the first one).
The hills on the left were generated in the 1.8.2 map generator, while the sea is thanks to the actual version's map generator, even the seafloor is cut.

Hmmm.
Not sure if I want to make this collapse or not.. (Using TFCraft, caveins can happen)

What texture pack are you using here?
What texture pack are you using here?
It looks like John Smith.
I swear, the village count has been rather dismal within these updates. Back on a 1.7.3 world, these villages were rather close, making travel a little easier. Now they're nearly impossible to find and are very, very often in deserts.
