Press F3, if Y is 13 you will be 13 blocks over the bottom of the map.
.
I think 15 is a better level than 13. the character is one block higher than bedrock so none of it gets in your way when mining, its only visibly under your feet.
Actually, the best layer to mine for diamonds is at 10 or 11 since they can spawn below, to the sides and above you very frequently.
I've always heard 12 is best. It is just above lava and diamonds can be found all around you.
Mining at layer 1 ~professional style~
Lava is extremely common at layer 10 and below, so I wouldn't really recommend digging that low since it would slow you down a lot.
You could just pour water onto the lava, then dig around any ore to make sure it's okay to mine.

I managed to encase a diamond ore vein in obsidian doing this.
I'm trying to remember the name of a logic puzzle that I played a long, long (8+ years) time ago. It's sort of hard to describe (and impossible to google), so I made it in redstone and was hoping someone would know the name of it.

The basic premise is when any of the 8 buttons (the leftmost button is unique) is pressed, it and the two adjacent lights are toggled. (There is a left-right wrap so that the rightmost button considers the leftmost light as "adjacent", and vice versa.) The goal is to have every light on at once. You can reset every light by pressing the leftmost button.
It's not a very difficult puzzle, and is easily brute-forced. But the name of it is totally escaping me. Any help would be great. Thanks.
The world is here, if anyone wants to give it a shot [del](made in an older version of Minecraft (too lazy to update (would need to do a manual update because it's so old)))[/del]:

(Also, the redstone is pretty sloppy. I almost never play anymore, so I'm rusty.)

Occurred to me that the world is in a different file format, from the older version of Minecraft. I'm converting it now so that you don't have to do it yourself.

Done. Link is the same.
The coords are always the coords of the player camera.

Regarding the discussions on mining, I've always considered mining through layers 11 and 12 to be ideal.
Bedrock occurs in the lowest five layers of the map (with the lowest supposedly being pure bedrock and nothing else). Lava lakes are common at layers 10 and below. And diamonds occur in the lowest 16 layers. If one digs through levels 11 and 12 (level 10 being the layer one is standing on and 12 being one's approximate Y reading), one will be digging through diamond territory on top of lava lake level and well above bedrock.

I already have the base texture for that lying around from the original FPTexturepack. Lemme get some draw animations, and I'll put it here next.

I was using world guard, and I had protected the _ _ global _ _ area, and it was all protected, and I had tested it out after I made a region that had the build flag set to allow, and once I de-op'd myself I wasn't able to build in that zone. Any ideas?

This is amazing. Works in 1.2.5, too, you don't need to swap the ladders for panes or bars.

Looking at the comments made me think it doesn't work.

Holy fucking shit, diamond armour. Fell in lava like five times, one was for at least 15 seconds and the other was about 7/8 while poisoned by a cave spider. Not once did my health drop below half. Fuckin' diamond armour.

Imagine the toll that puts on your diamond armor. Lava damage is pretty much constant. I managed to fall in unarmored, and the only thing that saved me from certain death was defending (MOUSE2). Seems like it reduces all forms of damage, to me.
Played with a friend for a few hours. This is the end result

Then I made an enchantment room. The hole to the right leads to two levers that open the door. The door itself has a pressure plate inside so no one gets stuck inside.

How did you get the circular stone brick? Creative mode?
MCEdit. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/13807-mcedit-minecraft-world-editor-now-open-source/
I meant like cartograph. Except that is outdated, all others listed on the minecraft wiki are online based. I just want to generate a picture of my world.
Have you guys played Breaking The Tower?
It's one of notch's older games for ludum dare. It's addictive, sort of like A Kingdom for Keflings.

Don't you just put 4 stone bricks in a crafting bench in a square?
Any Melbourners in here?
I am in the process of creating Melbourne Central (on creative mode of course)
I have got the main structure of the train station and i'm starting the below ground floor with Coles and the mini food court.
