The thing I noticed is in the background, it looks like a normal gravel path, but with different textures, so this probably means new gravel textures?

delete everything but saves and texture packs(if you want to keep them!) in .minecraft

Might sound stupid, but, have you deleted META-INF? Sometimes Winrar sort of fucks up for me and it doesn't actually delete it.

Start over and install using MC Patcher.

Yeah, he's an excellent coder. I asked him for a simple mod that disables the Eye of Ender tracking feature and he whipped it up in a few days.

Golden Apples are reverted back to what they did at the same cost. It filled up a lot of hunger if you crafted eight Gold Nuggets around an Apple. An effect proper for its crafting cost sounds like they're putting a miscellaneous effect with it too if it's going to require eight Golden Blocks again.
