My old steam name (as well as my FP name) Xyzzy I made up to replace one of my older nicknames. After noticing that there were three whole pages of people with the name Xyzzy I decided to change it to my current name, Zyzzi.
It's easier to pronounce too, so that's a bonus.

Cleverness :smug:
Evil Amplemann.
Recently went to Berlin, where the East German Traffic light men (Amplemann) have a cult following, with tonnes of merchandise for the things. My Avatar is a badly Painted Red Amplemann with evil eyes and a grin, and the Hammer & Sickle on his chest.
Jedibling, i liked star wars as a kid (and still do).
FireFork, random crazy name.
My steam name right now is $$$_大麻_$$$
I've gone through a lot of steam names, including B oE AN and variations of it.
I finally settled on $$$_大麻_$$$ because "大麻" is Japanese for "cannabis" and I like to bother people in Japanese TF2 and Dystopia servers. Plus it's gangzta as shit, but also weeaboorific.
Hm.. Commander. No idea why I chose it. I hate it now though, I go by the name of Toby now. Mainly since people can't pronounce my real name.
I came up with Chekko.
I used to have a malfunctioning keyboard. The spacebar didn't work properly. So I named myself: CantUseSpace
Not many people know that it came from my nick used previously on many services called PLing.
There's a story to how that name got started though but that's for another time...
ready for this?
Bloodpwnr
yah... my dad always makes fun of me now when I use his credit card for steam games. Bloodpwnr... such a shitty name...
TheCactusman - 3 years ago, I was going to play Runescape (I now realise its crap) on a different account as I usually did. I couldn't think of a name so I thought about my living room, and about the cacti that are lying on the mantle piece. I then instantly thought Cactusman, but since that name was taken I chose Cactusman13. Afterwards, I searched on YouTube for Cactusman and it came up with this guy: http://www.youtube.com/user/psylantwolf
He had 2 videos then and a year later made a third, all with a character called The Cactusman. So then I decided, That was my name. I now use that for almost everything I have an account on. Twitter, Facepunch, Minecraft and more. Sometimes people already have the username so I use variations of it e.g. thecactusguy for YouTube and iamthecactusman for deviantart.
I used to be a few

Oh hai.
I used to use pat_stix when I first created the account because that was my online name since I first started using the internet then I changed it to Pat.Lithum because Lithium was my favourite song from Nirvana then I changed it to Pat but when people said other things that sounded like Pat I got confused so I changed it to Patrick but other people used the name Patrick so I changed it to Patrick B. so when there is more than one Patrick they can call me Patrick B.
I've had tons, but i always end up going back to Floater.
Before i discovered Gmod 9 i always just used shit names i thought up on the spot or ripoffs of character names from stuff i'd seen/played recently, and when it came to actually thinking of a permanent or long-term steam name i had to think hard. I eventually settled on Floater because all i could make when i first started playing Gmod 9 was boats and other floating things. It kind of stuck and i couldn't think of anything better, and i didn't actually think of what else Floater meant untill i'd been using it for a long time. I've changed it a little a few times, i've been "Flaoter <3", "Franter" when i first got Left 4 Dead, but pretty much everyone i know still refers to me as Floater, irrelevant of what my steam name is. I'm currently called Kali, which is the first name of one of my characters in an RP i'm in, and everyone in the community still calls me Floater, except for one guy who keeps calling me Flaoter but he's just braindamaged.
Alfie, my cat :3:
My current steam name is Subject TB#931.
The "TB#931" was trampboy391, because when I was just starting out, steam decided to use my email address for whatever reason. So I just used it from then on. The "subject" is a little more recent, as I was making a laboratory map for my friend and once I was finished, I insisted on staying inside the test chambers as if I were a test subject. So now I'm Subject Trampboy931. What a name.
The Announcer.
I used to be Anti Christ for a few years, then I decided I needed a new name. Went to the first page I could think of (The TF2 blog) and read a quote from the Announcer. I liked it, and kept it.
Winsanity
Originally I came up with it as a combination of Windows and Insanity(the username I was using on sites at the time). But now I mostly think of it win and insanity put together.
geogzm - I took my name (george) and made it sound "electric." Then my friends saw it and I realized the new meaning they'd found was George Orgasms.
sweet.
Cheesesteak - My current name, it's a name of a local food from Philly. Shows my roots, is easy to pronounce.
Sgt. Napalm - When I was younger I choose that name because it sounded cool. I use it for everything thats not Steam.
LonelyTimeLord: Doctor Who (David Tennant) <3
I was playing a game of TF2, and my whole team was griefing by spycrabbing across 2fort. A "1337speaker" on the other team said "RUN! ITZ DA SPYCRABZ", I changed my name to Spycrabz and it stuck.
Kurt Cobain's Left Knee.
I don't really know.

MegaChalupa- Long and drawn out discussion between friends over crappy school Chalupas.

Because you take blast damage from a rocket launcher
Parody name of Mr. Someguy.
A corruption of Roland from Borderlands...
Parody name of Mr. Someguy.
Oh you.
Resonance_Cascade, fairly self explanatory.
Mine is currently "Mreow"
I believe it was formed out of my normal "Me0wmix" when it was taken on a site so I made one up, Mreow is suppose to sound like a cat meowing.
Me0wmix was derived from that catchy commercial, obviously, and I kept the "0" because it gave my nick some character.
ColonelCorn. Just a pun I came up with
