Yup, whenever I see a GP on my team we lost, on enemy team we won.
Teemo is credit to team if he uses his mushrooms a lot. I've seen a great deal of people escape ganks using them, as well as kill random enemies who wander into them.

I usually start with Ruby Crystal but I decided to start with Doran's Ring... Went 16-4 and carried the team to victory. Doran's Ring is actually very helpful.

Hardly. Whether you're going support or AP tank, there are much better options, e.g., MM for support.
Doran's Ring might've been viable before its price increase, but now that you can't buy pots with it, there's no point.
This is especially true considering Taric's early farm is quite weak without his maxed out Shatter, so throwing away precious early-game gold on an non-upgradeable item is pretty silly.

What do you get then? I usually get a ruby crystal and build it into a Spirit Visage but I always feel like I don't have enough AP to really do a decent amount of damage.

It's decent in combo with Spirit Visage for heals on yourself while tanking a tower or enemy champs, but seeing as Radiance only scales 0.2:1 per AP (as opposed to Imbue's 1.1:1 AP ratio), its heal is pretty negligible. Really it's for the aura for your allies--hit it right as your team rolls up on a tower or a team fight, and they instantly get an extra 90 dmg for as long as you're able to maintain Radiance.
Btw, 90 dmg is approximately the value of 2 BF swords.

I tend to shoot for Meki + 2 health pots (because I max out Shatter before I max out Imbue) or MM if I'm going straight aura support. The latter is much more rare, because I constantly find myself in situations where my team requires me to build as an AP tank rather than support.
As a result, I end up rushing Tear of the Goddess so I can keep my mana up for stuns and heals.
If I were ever going to use Doran's anything on Taric (keep in mind this is just for Taric, Doran's are perfectly viable on other champs), it'd be shield for the ridiculous armor buff.

Yup. Plus they always run when they see Taric coming, increasing their stun duration by ridiculous amounts, leaving them completely disabled for the 3-5 seconds it takes for my team to nerf them down.
Combine this with the armor debuff the enemy gets when they get hit with Shatter...
edit: Since Shatter is usually maxed for me around lvl 8, hitting an equal level champ with it would bring their armor down by 30 to, what, maybe 10-15 max?
