You shouldn't be able to switch roles - eg you shouldn't be able to go from a Devastator marine to an Assault marine and then back to Devastator, it's the same thing with vehicle crews.

I'm not so sure how they go about vehicle crews but is it really all that far fetched to be qualified in the operation of multiple vehicles? In Double Eagle Oskar Viltry goes from flying a Marauder bomber to a Thunderbolt fighter. Hell, he even shot down a Chaos fighter with the main gun of a Leman Russ Exterminator.

They do change roles, but it's more like progressing in rank. I think i read somewhere something about Land Raider crews being involved with the Adeptus Mechicus or something.
