Just got a 360. Worried about the red ring of death.

If it's one of the newer models there is much less chance of it happening.
360's are random some people don't expirence the RROD but people like me have had 2 rrod and 1 e74. The Jasper revision got rid of most rrod so if you buy it new you will be fine
Just don't keep your xbox in a closed off space where heat can build up. Also if you get the red rings don't freak out, often times my xbox does that but its just the that the power cord is slightly pulled out from rough handling. Just unplug it and plug it back in and you should be good to go.
I had my original xbox until christmas this year and it rrod'd.
I have gone through about 5 elites (only paid for 2 though) because of rrod in the last 5 months.

What the hell. Do you keep them wrapped in towels or something?
the elites shouldn't get rrod as often. Or so i've heard.
lies!

Not even close.
They are so well vented that they don't even get warm usualy.
I have had my Elite360 for exactly 3 months and 14 days and it's sometimes been on longer for 24 hours, and it's still fine.

Wait...

I'm serious, I got mine on February 14th.

Got my Elite back in November of 2009.
It RROD'd the second I turned it on. It magically fixed itself 2 days later, but why it happened still remains a mystery.
Think of the 360's on display in Wal mart or Best Buy.. They stay locked up in a box all day, and stay on all day, every day, especially in the large Wal marts that are open 24/7, and they last for a couple years even, They've pretty much perfected building the Xbox and its components, it's as rock solid as they come now

Well ofcorse they perfected it, i would too if i were building the same piece of hardware for YEARS, over and over again, without any changes.
My 360 has sat on my entertainment center for 4 years. Not to mention I took it from NY to California. RROD only happens to 15 year olds who just shove it in the corner on a rug. Just keep it in a good spot and your fine. I played Read Dead Redemption for 9 hours and my Xbox was only a little warm.
I'm just saying... The RRoD is actually rare now, considering how many systems are out there
I've played with an Elite for 8-10 hours, I didn't get a red ring.
Funny thing.
Walmart and other places get those display ones for either free or use the ones from supply, if they die they replace them as quick as possible or just turn them off to make people think they are just off for the time being
Unless you leave it on and block anyway the air can get out, small chance you'll get it. RRoD has 3 year warranty so send it to MSoft. If it does it again, it's easy to fix yourself.

I believe the latest model of the Xbox 360 has been fixed of this issue, and if you have just bought it brand new there is a good chance that you have the latest model :)
On the other hand, If its second hand, you basically just bought a ticking time bomb.
Had my 360 elite for about 2 years, only had 1 problem with it which microsoft fixed for free.
Worry when it is 3 years old. Then the RROD warranty is gone. I have had my 360 for 2 years now, no RROD.
If you bought it new from like Future Shop or something, it will automatically have 3 year RROD warranty, as far as I know, with MicroSoft.
I thought they had some law suit, so now the RROD warranty is life-time
I think I have mentioned it enough times that the new Jasper chipset have practically eliminated the chances of RRoD due to overheating, because of the unbelievably low failure rate.

Um.. no?
I have one of the first releases of the 360, it RRoD'ed a little while ago, I removed the x-clamps inside for washers and bolts and replaced the thermal paste, its been fine for months and months.

I don't see the reason of you posting this, consoles are supposed to have a long lifetime, and yes they would have more time to make sure it runs stable, what are you saying?
I think the best way to go about worrying about the RROD is accepting that it probably will happen. Everyone with an 360 whom ive med has at least had it once. I know they made their systems more efficient as of late, but its still good to be weary.
And if it does RROD, its covered by warranty, and it will be a free repair.
Also, you get a free month of Live..so its not that bad.
There are people too which know how to fix 360's by opening the cases and messing with the thermals, but I would only suggest doing that if your warranty were to expire. (I think there's a long term warranty for RROD's, im not sure how long though)
just don't keep your 360 up against anything, keep it in a fairly open space
mines survived 3 years, the only thing that's started to break is the dvd laser. but still reads fine when encouraged(tapping technique yay)
edit: there have been times when my 360 has been on for more than 10 hours so I know it's fine
red ring is once again just an example of people not knowing how to care for their shit.
edit 2: mines one of the earliest benq drive batch 360's btw.
Don't slam near it, do not keep it on carpet, do not lay it on its side, and keep it cool.
My brother has the rings of death and he fixes it all time the (like every day) by sticking two ear buds and jamming the fans until it starts flashing then he takes them out and restarts the console and it's fine. :3:
I've had my Elite for a long time now (can't remember exactly when I got it, but it's been quite a while) and I've never had the RRoD. Granted, a few times the green light has turned red, it quickly turned green after that.
Other than that, I've never had a problem with the xbox itself.
3 of mine had lost their ability to read discs so least of my worries is the rrod...
I bought my 360 the day it came out. I have gotten the RROD on it about 4 times, and every time it has happened I have turned it off and on again. It's still going strong.
ive had mine for 2 years and i play nearly every day for about 3 to 4 hours and ive never had a problem with it
