if you've seen the BF3 gameplay video, it looks exactly like a call of duty clone. until they release something better, I'm really skeptical of buying it. then again it was some single-player footage and i don't plan on playing the campaign at all. if it's got classic BF2 conquest gameplay as its primary focus in MP then I'm good, but so far it shows no promising signs at all

The thing is that we've said that to ourselves everytime a new CoD game comes out and it still ends up the same. I mean if each of the developers look at criticisms of the old CoDs and then take them into account when making their sections of the game, while also talking to gamers who dislike it, and communicating with the community and each other, it'll turn out good, but if not, well...
I can't just reject a game straight off the bat without seeing the footage, even when taking into account previous games by the devs. Sure we can assume, but like you said, we haven't played it, assumptions often lead to disaster, its why hype can be such a bad thing.

If they actually pull the survival mode off quite well then I am going to get this because nothing gets me more in a game than a tension filled survival mode :v: Best fun with friends it's incredible.

When they release multiplayer footage, then we can better assess things, but the campaign is the only thing we've seen footage of.
However bad it might be, it at least looks cool.
Longer singleplayer with better pacing (Like COD4 pacing not the recent EXPLOSIONS ARE GOOD PLOT ELEMENTS), spec ops with monthly new content, and a MP with support.
